A movie recommendation
One Nation Under God, 1993, a documentary about reparative thearapies to cure homosexuality. I watched it on Netflix last night. The film is built around Gary Cooper and Michael Bussee, a gay couple who met while having founded Exodus, the ex gay ministry. The film provides a historical back drop of all the methods to cure gays. There was talk therapy, aversion therapy, and once phychiatrists figured out it was quackery prayer therapy. Some of the stories related can help explain why this is such a fault line for so many of us. Why the reaction was so viceral. It also gives some of the younger people here a historical perspective when a young Mike Wallace discusses the homosexual threat. If you have netflix I recommend it. Otherwise it might be quite difficult to find.

3. I understand that you can also cure left handed people so
they will become right handed, especially if you threaten to cut off their left hand.

8. they tried hitting my left hand with a ruler. It didn't work. All it did was
make me hate authority figures.

My sister in law came out at Thanksgivings dinner some years ago. It was great to see the look on her fundy older sister's face. She tried to make her gay sister go to a Christian "therapist." She gave her a "gift card" good for several sessions at the "therapist."

12. It only took having my left hand repeatedly slashed
by a ruler with a steel edge. Then my right hand got slashed because I held a pen like a left handed person. Nothing pleased those old gals.

Then I left. For good.

5. I wonder if netflix would sell it
Otherwise we would have to use one slot in the cue until they returned it.

7. I watched it a long time ago
and then saw it on Netflix's player last night so I watched it again. It holds up somewhat well given the current debate.

10. I lent my VHS copy out in the 90's and the person never returned
it. This person also has my VHS copy of "Manufacturing Consent" by Noam Chomsky but that's ok I don't use a VCR anymore. :P Anyways I found it amusing that these Exodus International people thought they could turn guys straight by making them play softball and the girls would become straight by learning make-up tips.

Edited on Fri Nov-23-07 06:42 PM by terrya
Though I know I'll be very angry while I'm watching this.

Thanks for the recommendation.

And I think the suggestion to send a copy of this movie to the Obama campaign is a good one.
