If we're not careful, Mitt Romney will be elected as the "candidate of change"

It'll be stupid if it happens. But it may happen.

If in the General Election of 08, the Democratic Party campaigns, and is perceived, as more of the same-old,same-old corporate "centrism" of the last 20 years we may well lose to the likes of a Mitt Romney.

Romney sucks, but he is a talented politician. And he's a "fresh face" to the majority of voters. And he's smooth enough to convince enough voters that he is the "Candidate of Change" with a responsible face.

Romney is a shallow opportunist and a hypocrite. But he's a smart businessman and manager. His general demeanor is appealing enough that he could well convince voters who are sick of right-wing Bush-style nuttiness that he is a reasonable "moderate" who will bring change to Washington.

6. Yep, compassion will be ooozzing from the GOP ticket...
...which will magically be transformed into Scrooglike stinginess and social repression after the election.

8. He'll be the anti-Rudy
A lot of GOPers will have second thoughts about Rudy, the more they are exposed to him.

Romney is playing a classic campsign of appealing to the "base" in the primaries. Then, if nominated, he's transform himself into a "moderate" (wink, wink) who will bring a "new outside" perspective to Washington.

10. Romney has more power and influence than you may realize
Romney has refused to give the standard form to report his net worth.

Instead he says it is all in a family trust and the trust manager says it is none of our business.

You guys have NO IDEA how powerful and corrupt this guy is.

I've had several people tell me, if their candidate isn't the nominee, they will vote for him....I just don't get it. He's a fake to me as a Ken doll.

14. Yep. I've recommended this
thread, because I think that the republicans have a couple candidates who could provide a difficult contest in '08. And it's not because they are "good" candidates -- Bush2 showed that a jackass could win -- it's because the republicans have a machine that is prepared for this type of election.

16. Absolutely correct.
Romney could be very popular with Republicans and many Republican-leaning Independents. It could be a very difficult contest in '08.

15. Nominate Clinton and ANY of the Republicans running will claim the change mantle
and they would probably get away with it. The only thing left for them would be to figure out a way to repudiate Bush without alienating their base, but, with Hillary to pillory, they probably wouldn't even have to worry about that.

Since Romney never said, "thank God George Bush is my President," he'd have an easier time of it than Rudy. Also, Mr. Bain Capital shouldn't have too much trouble bamboozling people with claims of private sector competence.

17. Nobody changes his positions on "core values" more often than Willary. How can we compete with that?
