Is Obama considered a "favorite son" in Iowa?
I remember in 1988, Dole and Gephardt won their primaries - but not the nomination - and the explanation was that they were from neighboring states.

So I am curious as to how Obama being from Illinois is playing a role in his popularity.

Not a flame. I will vote for the final nominee, whoever s/he is.

1. Having talked to a few Iowans about Obama, Illinois never comes up as a reason...
...for any discussion.

Iowans are pretty proud of their state. If anything, saying you are from Illinois is not exactly something that many Iowans would smile with glee about.

Political preference due to bordering-state provincialism would account for probably .04% when it all gets said and done.

However, Barack Obama does understand and discuss rural issues with Illinois constituents. There's a lot of agriculture and other similar industries that are common with both states and the midwest in general.

2. Thanks. This means that if he wins
he will not have to "explain" this when he moves to the next states.

6. It would not be factor with Iowa. However, Iowa and Illinois share similar concerns
both are largely rural states with their cities having alot of manufacturing - which has since been outsourced and service taking the place.
So, Obama would be familiar with the issues that are important to the people in Iowa and would have a grounding in those issues like farming, outsourcing, ect.
