Democrats in denial

By Jack Kelly

"Democrats have remained emotionally invested in a narrative of defeat and retreat in Iraq, reluctant to acknowledge the progress we are now achieving, or even that the progress has enabled us to begin drawing down our troops there, " he said.
<snip>

<snip>
Democratic political leaders are as deeply in denial as this benighted caller. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi are making yet another effort to cut off funding for the war. At their debate in Las Vegas Nov. 15, the Democratic presidential candidates pretended the surge hasn't happened.
<snip>

<snip>
Though victory in Iraq would deprive Democrats of an issue they were counting on, if they acknowledge they were wrong and move on, they wouldn't be hurt very much. Democrats do best when foreign policy isn't an issue. If war fears recede, the foremost issue on voters' minds next fall likely would be health care, on which Democrats have an advantage.

But Americans will hold it against Democrats if they keep trying to sabotage victory.

2. Democrats in denial

as are the Republicans. When I voice something negative (but true) about Democrats on my posts (on Democrats.com) they mostly are removed. Who is destroying Democrats.com?

Only positive posts are allowed? If this is true how can we big "D" clean up our own let alone the Republicans in Congress?

There is a post about Mario Cuomo asking he support impeachment. I said, Mario on CSPAN declared he wouldn't support impeachment. It was plain and it was clear. Mario no longer has any power anyway. What do we care what he thinks?

Old Democrats change their minds with the wind. That's my beef.

4. Here's what I wrote.
I've never found a good definition of what constitutes "victory" in Iraq. Exactly who is the U.S. fighting there? The Shiites? The Sunnis? Al Qaeda in Iraq? The Kurds? Insurgents? What is the definition of an insurgent? Are they the 80% of foreign fighters in Iraq (not counting the U.S.) who are Saudis and who cross the border from Saudi Arabia to join in with some other fighting group? If so, which group are they joining? Are all those groups fighting the U.S.? If they are all fighting the U.S., are they fighting the U.S. separately or together?

What is the definition of a "victory" in Iraq? Does one group discontinue fighting? Do several groups discontinue fighting? Do all groups quit fighting with the U.S. and only fight with each other? Is a cease fire on all sides enough to declare victory? Should victory be declared arbitrarily at some point, even if there is still violence, just so U.S. troops can be brought home? If you expect U.S. troops to stay indefinitely, what should their role be after a "victory"?

How would a simple cease fire improve conditions for the average Iraqi family in the absence of a stable government in place, key word there being "stable"? After the much ballyhooed purple fingers of a "democratic" election, now the Bush admin doesn't think the Maliki government is the right government for Iraq. Will they overthrow Maliki? If so, what comes next? Another American governor? Another Iraqi puppet? Will there be a working government to represent all ethnic groups without bias? Will the Iraqi government be capable of assuring the safety of all citizens from attacks by opposing religious groups throughout the country? Will the Iraqi government be capable of uniting all the diverse ethnic groups? Will the Iraqi government be able to supply health care to all? Food to all? Electricity to all, all of the time? How about clean water? Will it be safe for children to go to school everywhere in Iraq?

What role is there for the U.S. in a post-"victory" Iraq? Do you believe that having U.S. occupation forces on the ground there might be what provokes Iraqi citizens to violence? (When the British left Basra, violence dropped 90%. The violence there was because the British were there, not in spite of the British being there.)

What about oil? Bush's best boy Greenspan says this war was all about the oil. Does victory mean the U.S. has secured Iraq's oil for itself and for favorite oil companies? Would splitting Iraq into separate sections based on different ethnic groups, more along the lines of how things were before World War I, be a victory? Who would take the lead if such a split were the best answer for stopping the killing?

You've got lots of questions to answer here, questions that never even occurred to you when you wrote your little Democrat-bashing editorial. When a person really stops and thinks and doesn't just knee-jerk bash the Dems, it's not so simple is it? Define "victory" for me and for the rest of us in the U.S. who can't make sense of it. Why did Bush-Cheney invade Iraq in the first place? WMD was the first excuse, not a reason. Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld all knew full well Saddam had no WMDs. Saddam was a bad guy (reason #2)? He's been gone a long time, and we're still there. Why? War on terror (reason #3)? There were no terrorists in Iraq under Saddam's regime. He and Osama hated each other.

Don't know your age, but have you considered enlisting and going there to help in the fight you so strongly support verbally? How about family members? So many people who claim loudly that they support this war, don't seem to have the courage to go fight in it. Of course, Bush and Cheney didn't even have guts enough to fight in Viet Nam, Cheney getting something like five deferments and Bush getting a cushy job with TANG defending the east coast of Texas, from which he later went AWOL, of course. They talk tough, but they're only tough when other people are doing their fighting for them. How about you, tough guy?

When you can answer all these complex questions that the Republican warmongers never even gave a thought to,then you can claim the privilege of bashing Democrats.

6. He should show his confidence in the surge by visiting Baghdad.
Without an entourage.

Without a flak jacket.

Without a weapon.

Without some Blackwater goons.
