Short of Money, G.O.P. Enlists Rich Candidates
This is so, so sad. Who cares about the candidate, as long as they're rich.

Short of Money, G.O.P. Enlists Rich Candidates

By RAYMOND HERNANDEZ
Published: November 26, 2007

WASHINGTON, Nov. 25 — Confronting an enormous fund-raising gap with Democrats, Republican Party officials are aggressively recruiting wealthy candidates who can spend large sums of their own money to finance their Congressional races, party officials say.

At this point, strategists for the National Republican Congressional Committee have enlisted wealthy candidates to run in at least a dozen competitive Congressional districts nationwide, particularly those where Democrats are finishing their first term and are thus considered most vulnerable. They say more are on the way.

These wealthy Republicans have each already invested $100,000 to $1 million of their own money to finance their campaigns, according to campaign finance disclosure reports and interviews with party strategists. Experts say that is a large amount for this early in the cycle.

In New York’s 20th Congressional District, in the Albany area, Alexander Treadwell, an independently wealthy former State Republican Party chairman, has invested more than $320,000 of his money in a race that Republicans predict will cost each candidate at least $3 million.

While Mr. Treadwell, the grandson of a founding executive of General Electric, plans to raise money from donors, he has privately told party officials that he is ready to invest more of his money to unseat Representative Kirsten Gillibrand, a freshman Democrat, Republicans close to him said.

1. the slant of the story also shows the bias of the nytimes
because if it were dems doing this, the slant to the story would be how 'desperate' they are, and also infer that they were begging.

How do I know this? Well, when the neocons were at their zenith, there were numerous stories being written about how the democratic party was desperate and trying to avoid becoming irrelevant.

Now that the tables have turned, somewhat, the slant is that the repubs are being "aggressive", not desperate.

3. G.O.P. Candidate Promotion Ad:
- Hi! Have you got money just growing moldy in your bank accounts? Are you tired of trekking from the yacht club to the golf club, and back again to your exclusive, armed and protected communities? Is the wife getting bored with all those silly little country club committees and the wine and cheese circuit?

Well, then running for Congress may just right for you!!! You get to make laws and tell people what to do, all at taxpayer expense. You get to pick your own staff of minions who will walk around all day just doing your bidding and running errands. AND.... constantly telling you what a great person you are!!! Why these people will do "almost anything" to advance your career, because it means that it advances their careers.

You get free travel, free mailing privileges, the use of the exclusive Congressional gym and dining rooms, while others have to stand and wait. And corporations WILL GIVE YOU MONEY!!!! And the beauty of all this??? They have to pay you for it!!!! Yes that's right, the taxpayers must foot the whole bill!!! This is the most exclusive club in the world. So why not join? Please send a cashier's check for $300,000 to show your serious interest and that'll get things started.

Oh, and by the way. You still have to get enough votes from the poor saps out there, so don't say anything stupid about how low to moderate income people are the scum of the earth, or the liberal press will be all over you......"

- And the desperation sets in.....

K&R!
