Douglas Wilder cools on Obama

Former Virginia Gov. L. Douglas Wilder, the nation’s first elected black governor, is backing off plans for a quick endorsement of Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) and is remaining neutral for now.

This summer, Wilder lavished praise on Obama and said he planned to endorse a candidate for president in early fall.

In a news release on Thursday, Wilder said: “A report by Jet magazine (Nov. 26, 2007) stating that I have endorsed Sen. Barack Obama is incorrect. While I previously have said kind things about the senator, I have made no endorsement of any kind at this time.”

Wilder enjoys political gamesmanship and has a history of withholding favor, so his future intentions remain unclear.

Whatever the statement means, the decision is a loss for Obama, who lagged Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) slightly in a study of black voters released this week.

Does Wilder still has some clout? We,Richmonders wish we could send him back to where he came from everyday he keeps pissing people off with his arrogant self. Our governor Tim Kaine is endorsing Obama though if that amounts to something. Hope voters in the end will follow their own will. Nobody not even Ophrah can tell who to vote for.

8. Who cares? Gov. Kaine has been campaigning for Obama all over Virginia.
Besides, Wilder is famous for waiting ... which means he's going to wait until after Iowa, NH, etc.
