Edwards: Please take some speech lessons !!
To me, Edwards has it all. Heart. Brains. Drive. Compassion.

So why isn't he the unquestionable favorite?

I think it is because of his accent. Like it or not, he can sound like a hick. And much of the country equates a thick southern accent with lack of intelligence. Like it or not - it's reality. I am just happy that the whole subject of getting NATO involved in Iraq is passe. Because he used to pronounce it NAY' TOE and I couldn't help but cringe.

John, please get some voice lessons ! I know there are speech experts who can help you tone down your accent. You are a national treasure and our country needs you desperately!!

1. this man is who he is and he's won in court because he knows how to present
himself. Not everyone can be a glazed over rehearsed Clinton wife.

But, he's won in court in the Carolinas, right? I am not asking him
to change a single word he says, jut to moderate the accent - since I know it will hurt him (NY, CA. CT, MA, NJ)

25. Have no idea if he would have won the same case elsewhere. All
I do know is that up north people think anyone with a thick southern accent is not as intelligent as the rest. It's reality. Shouldn't be, but it is.

32. well, I have only one comment
fuuuuuuck them!

Since I am half Tennessee and half Brooklyn, I have experience on both sides.

And you can bet your sweet ass that down south they think that people with a damned yankee accent are hucksters, shysters, shills, you-name-it.

But the voters who stumble half asleep to the polls and vote based on accent, hair color, or house size are not going to be swayed no way no how. So I repeat:

fuuuuuuck them!

39. It's not a matter of "voting based on accent" No one does that
It's a matter of not even giving him the time of day because there is a stereotype.

Yes, I agree, been north and south, in Texas they say "Yankee" like it is a dirty word.

That robotic, drone of a monotone--combined with her digital emotions and lack

It's not natural and it gives me the friggin creeps.

I can't imagine sitting down and having coffee with someone who talks

His accent is fine and .... genuine. Not the manufactured one you hear on movies and TV.

Mike Huckabee by comparison doesn't have much of an accent. Is he more presentable some how?

Edwards has a slight southern accent, yes, but it is the upper-crust Carolinian accent. Not a hick/hillbilly accent. WORLD of difference there. I truly don't believe his accent does anything but brand him as authentic, not some fake candidate who is scared to be what he is or admit where he came from. Worst thing he could possibly do? Now, don't get me wrong Georgia accents are just fine, Alabama too... but they have STRONG southern accents. Then check out Louisiana, and I love that place... but that state accent catches me a lot!

Actually, I don't hear that much of an accent from Edwards, and I don't live in "hick-town" either! Actually I live just a little south from the town they call one of the "cultural centers of the south."

jump without thinking - trash the messenger. What would have been much more refreshing would have been an intellectual debate about how the way one speaks affects one's image. Especially when the person is running for national office. I want the man to win. You tell me what's keeping him down. And don't say that Hillary owns the media - that's old.

but being 'old' does not make an argument wrong. Is that the sort of 'intellectual debate' you seek?

What's "keeping him down" is that big business owns the media and the pollsters and they are scared of him. Hillary doesn't own the media - big business just likes Hillary.

I expect you'll find that big business does not own the people of Iowa, and both of the glamor kids may be in for a comeuppance.

Yeah, it's a "thick southern accent" as you say, but he plays it up perfectly, that much I gotta give him. He really knows how to deliver that southern charm. Unfortunately for his competitors, Edwards voice is a powerful weapon. It's kind of the same thing as the Goddess of Peace's smile. It just melts ya.

62. Interesting. I think I'll pull up some of his videos and look again.
I know a lot of things he says he says over and over again. Guess they all do. But, when you do that, and your opponents get wind of it, they have plenty of time to come up with zingers against it.

69. I like his accent. It's who he is and that's AOK with me.
I don't want John to change his accent the way Hillary has done or George W. does.

I live in Southern California and I've never heard anyone call him a "hick".

And he does have it "all" as you say.

71. Pray, what other way is there to pronounce "NATO?"
I have never heard anyone pronounce it any other way than "NAY-toe." How on earth do you say it? "Neigh-doe?" "Natto?" "Netto?" By the way, I somewhat agree with you on obnoxious accents. I would never vote for someone who sounded like Edith Bunker, no matter what her qualifications. Naturally, as a Georgian living in Mississippi, I personally have no accent at all. :D

74. John's accent is just fine
If Johnson can be elected.

If Carter can be elected.

If Clinton can be elected...all with authentic Southern accents, then I don't think Edwards will have a problem.

Beside...after 6 1/2 years of having to listen to the absolute worst fake accent on the planet, I would definitely rather listen to John Edwards over the pResident ass-hat squatting in the White House.
