OBAMA ATTACKS: Labor

Obama-labor relationship tense in Iowa

By: Ben Smith

Barack Obama
Candidate offends Dem backers by calling their support a "flood of Washington money" in tight Iowa race.

RECOMMEND

Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign manager has spent the final days of the Iowa campaign railing against “big interests” that have poured a “flood of Washington money” into the state in “underhanded” efforts to support his rivals.

But more than three quarters of that money has come from a pillar of the Democratic Party: labor unions.

And top union officials who support Obama’s rivals are in turn accusing the Illinois Democrat, who once sought their endorsements, of trying to damage labor’s political role.

“I’m taken aback that somebody like Obama would think that Oprah Winfrey has a greater right to participate in the political process than the four million people I represent,” said Edward J. McElroy, the president of the American Federation of Teachers, which has spent $799,619 on Sen. Hillary Clinton’s behalf, referring to the television host’s high-profile support for Obama. “It’s sour grapes. It sounds just like the charges the Republicans make.”

18. i would love to support him
but every now and then he levels attacks on the other Dem candidates. We're not the enemy. Repugs are tearing the world apart.

Why is he dissing Gore? His health care policy, which is an extension on the existing ineffective and downright horrible health care policy is also suspect.

9. My wife and I are both union members
and its not Obama we support. I like Hillary, Bill Richardson, Dodd, Biden, Edwards, Obama in that order. Richardson, Dodd and Biden don't have a real shot so its more like Clinton, Edwards and Obama a very distant third.

14. Obama's record with labor is fantastic. He's just slapping back at 527 ads by some labor groups
The AFSCME ad, through 527s endorsing Hillary, attack Obama's mandate-less health care plan even though the president of AFSCME is on record being against mandates.

The American Federation of Teachers use mailers and ads for Hillary. Good for them... As for McElroy's kneejerk Hillbottism that it "sounds just like the charges the Republicans make", that's an old trick. Nowhere has the Obama campaign said that people can't participate in the election process.

Obama simply is swatting back at the 527 slimebags that think that lying about him is an OK thing to do.

20. Sorry, the Carter role has been taken.
Edwards is the one who will have turned off the Democratic Congress.
