Edwards advisors: Deal with Kucinich hurt them more than helped in 2004
http://marcambinder.theatlantic.com/archives/2008/01/

Note: Last cycle, the Edwards and Kucinich campaigns agreed to tell their supporters to join each other's preference groups if one or the other didn't make "threshold." Edwards advisers now believe that the deal hurt them more than it helped them.

5. Precisely!
I was an observer at a caucus in 2004 in Des Moines and the 7 Kucinich people who then went to Edwards helped him come in second over Gephardt. Kucinich caucus goers HELPED Edwards.

This recent complaint from the Edwards camp regarding Kucinich "not helping" is sour grapes at best.

2. They lie.

Here's a clue. Look at the Entrance Poll numbers for Edwards and Kucinich. Then look at the final results. See a trend?

15. Edwards was in 2nd place in the entrance poll & 2nd place in the results.
So the Edwards-Kucinich deal had no effect on Edwards' standing.

Interesting. Thank you.

18. Going in, Edwards was nine points behind Kerry. Coming out he was six points behind.
Edited on Tue Jan-01-08 08:33 PM by jefferson_dem
The difference there (three points) is rougly identical to the difference in DK's support going in and coming out.

Hmmm...

The final ordering of the candidates was unchanged... True that.

20. I see what you are saying. Edwards went from 26 to 31.8 -
Edited on Tue Jan-01-08 09:17 PM by IndyOp
from entrance poll to results - so he had to pick up delegates from Kucinich and Dean and Gephardt and "other" to pick up those 5.8 percentage points.

Kucinich might account for 2.3. Dean dropped by 2. Gephardt by 0.6. "Other" dropped by 1.

In any case - I found that Edwards' aides made the statement about not wanting to make a deal with Kucinich before the Obama-Kucinich pact was announced today...

In A Reason For Edwards's Confidence: The Second Choicers posted by Marc Ambinder today at 11:30 a.m. -- he posted the same statement from Edwards aides -- well before the Kucinich-Obama deal was announced this afternoon.

BTW: Edwards aides say they haven’t made any pre-emptive deals with any other campaigns to share support if a candidate fails to be viable in a particular precinct. In 2004, deals were made with Dennis Kucinich’s campaign, but aides say that, for various reasons, the deals may have hurt Edwards in certain very liberal precincts. Edwards caucus precinct captains will be equipped with specific arguments to make for supporters of different candidates. Biden supporters, as an example, would be targeted differently than Dodd supporters.

3. There is no quoting of Edwards or his advisors.
This appears to be an opinion of the blogger, but he is reporting it as if it were a fact.

Sic Judge Judy on him! Hearsay isn't evidence.

7. There is no trading of supporters this time; it's just Kucinich sending them to Obama
All Obama did in return was help get Kucinich into the debates.

13. I wish Kucinich would have put more effort into Iowa.
I enjoyed seeing him and spending time w/his supporters in 2004 and very much like his staff member here in 2008. His voice was very muched missed this cycle. If Obama offered to do something for Kucinich in return for 'second choice' support I disagree with that, Obama has no control over the MSM and any promise about assistance in getting into debates is a false one. If I'm way off and wrong about the give-take please tell me. I hate being wrong x(

14. All Obama can do is advocate it publicly
which is what he did. That's probably all Dennis asked of him. I'm not sure where you got the idea that Obama promised to get him in.
