4. hmm
I seem to remember in 2003 they started to come in pretty early, like between 9-10pm EST. But if its close that could be different. i think the caucus system make its easier to tally the votes, get them sent out, and then onto other caucus business.

11. I would guess you are about right
We will call in to Des Moines after the second alignment with the delegate count. That should be done by @10PM EST.

3. I am taking my laptop to my caucus...
Edited on Wed Jan-02-08 10:35 PM by TwoSparkles
...and I will try my best to post what is happening, as it is happening.

I'm a precinct captain, and I'll be busy with those duties--but I will do my best!

You will know what is happening in my precinct, as it is happening--or shortly thereafter!

The caucus begins at 7:00 p.m. cst. Usually the process takes around an hour.

8. They say on MSM that it takes about three hours.
I hope you're right as I don't want to wait up too late. I'll be looking forward to your posts. Thanks in advance.

13. It takes as long as it takes...
The average time is about an hour.

Some precincts wrap up in about 15 minutes.

In the 04 caucus we had things wrapped up in just over an hour. My precinct
had about 100 participants and they're expecting 130 this year.

I'm sure some precincts take longer.

12. I am caucusing for Obama...
...and I am also very much in support of Edwards and I hope
Biden makes it into the administration of our nominee, or
as a vp.

Should be fun!

14. Good luck!
Last question... what are your predictions?
Obama has the big crowds and buzz, but the youth vote is so unreliable.
Clinton has the big machine, but is not many people's 2nd choice.
Edwards has solid numbers and solid support, but doesn't seem to lead many polls.
Not sure what to think.

16. My predictions are based on what I've seen...
...that has happened with the campaigns in Iowa, what the
polls are saying and some educated guesses.

I do think that Hillary will come in third...a distant third.

She's run an abysmal campaign. Her polls have been declining for some
time. If you notice in the last Des Moines Register poll from Dec 28-29 to
Dec 29-30, Hillary went from 26-23. Both Obama and Edwards increased, with
Edwards ticking up slightly and Obama gaining several points.

That's huge. As the caucus draws near, people are firming up their
decisions and their breaking away from Clinton and going with Obama
or Edwards. This is exactly what happened with Dean in '04.

The candidate who can be the best second-choice candidate will win the
day. Edwards is predicted by many to be the most popular second-choice
candidate. Those caucus goers who support non-viable candidates (most likely
Dodd, Biden, Richardson, Kucinich) will have to pick someone. They have the
opportunity to catapult someone into the lead.

There is so much enthusiasm for both Obama and Edwards. I think it will be
very close between the two of them.

I think they will run away with the entire thing and Hillary will be third, but
very far behind. She will have a poor showing and her real competitors, in the
end, will be Biden--who will be following close behind her, but in fourth place.

17. Rumor had it a while back that Clinton was not going to win in Iowa
but come back strong later. The idea being to keep the race exciting and unpredictable. So, if she doesn't win in Iowa it doesn't surprise me. A win in Iowa may not even predict who the eventual candidate might be.

18. I'd buy that theory...
...because I think Hillary Clinton is a very smart, politically savvy woman.

It appeared to me that she wasn't even trying.

She accused an Iowan of being a "plant" at one of her events, because she didn't like
his question about Iran. Her events were media events not opportunities to get to know
her or challenge her. It was like she didn't want to bother.

Perhaps, she felt that if she skipped Iowa, she'd tank like Guiliani has done. So, she
didn't want to skip Iowa. However, maybe she just went through the motions and has
her sights set on states that she feels are more important and pivotal in her campaign.

That would make perfect sense, because she ran a half-baked campaign.

7. With the 7pm start time, the turn out size will be known and most precincts should be done around 9
and observers in every precincts the results should be clear by 10:30 eastern time.
