So, I was at Rikers Island today (yeah, the prison) and as I do every time go there for work (I do some parole hearings there) I brought a newspaper with me.
I usually bring the NY Post in, because it's easy to read and I like the sports section. Well, when I went on the newsstand today I saw Obama on the front cover of the Daily News, so I got that and brought it with me.
I laid it on the table when I got to the conference room where the parole hearings are held.
Within minutes, people who were walking in noticed the paper and started talking about last night. I was amazed that there were that many people who took an interst in the caucuses. I had judges, lawyers, prison guards, parole officers, all talking about, debating, discussing the election.
It was wonderful.
They were all talking about Obama and if they thought he could win. All but one judge said they thought he could. That judge basically said she thought "they" wouldn't let him win if he were the nominee. I'm not sure what she meant, but I think I had an idea.
Everyone seemed to realize the importance of what happened last night. And this was a big mix of people. Whites, blacks, hispanics. Everyone was abuzz about Iowa and what it meant.
People are talking. And I don't think they're going to stop until November.
