My thoughts on Obama and Edwards
Edited on Fri Jan-04-08 06:01 PM by Krashkopf
Here are my problems with Obama - after the trashing of the Constitution, I think that the "Corporatization of America" is THE most important issue facing us, today, and I am afraid that, like Hillary Clinton, Obama is too closely aligned WITH the Corporatocracy to institute the changes necessary to take America back from the Corporations, and return it to "WE THE PEOPLE." (Obama is the 2nd largest recipient of campaign donations from the health insurance industry - after Hillary - regardless of political party. To me, that is very scary.)

Secondly, as much as I like Obama (his speech last night was great, and it gave me the same "spine-tingly" feeling I got when I saw him give the Keynote speech the Convention in 2004 and thought "Damn, that guy is going to be the first black President!") I do NOT think that this is the right time to be trying to build a "Purple America" were Democrats and Republicans work together to find "common ground" on issues.

Today's Republican Party is SO FAR to the radical right wing (having been thoroughly taken over by the "neo-cons and the movement conservatives"), that there is NO WAY to find "common ground" with it without "selling out" MAINSTREAM Democratic principles. As John Edwards said - "You can't find common ground with people who would allow a teenager to die because they put corporate profits over her need for a liver transplant."

Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi and the Democratically-controlled Congress are still trying to "find common ground" with Bush, and, as a consequence, the war has been funded for another year, and the Telecom Companies still might get blanket immunity for spying on US, etc., etc., ad nauseum. Is that REALLY what America needs right now?

I don't think so. In my opinion, what America NEEDS (as opposed to what might make us feel better), is an AGGRESSIVE PROGRESSIVE, like John Edwards, to fight back against the neo-fascists and the Corporatists. It will only be AFTER fundamental balance has been restored to the body politic - in say, 8 years - that America will be ready for the type of bipartisan, coalition building, government that Barack Obama would epitomize.

All of that being said, Obama is currently my second choice, and, unless Edwards does much better than expected in New Hampshire, or Obama does much worse, I will probably think about switching before the Colorado Caucuses. I know a "band wagon" when I see one, and certainly, as of last night, Obama looks like destiny's candidate.

1. I think if I had never posted here
last night might have felt like a victory.
But his supporters are very good at showing us the ugly underbelly and it is a major turnoff to even consider Obama nowadays, especially after the idiotic "Edwards didn't say Congratulations" threads.:puke:
Obama is quickly moving from someone I could support to someone I will NEVER support.

11. I only read a thread: "Did he just declare VICTORY?"!
Edited on Fri Jan-04-08 07:33 PM by robbedvoter
It was a supporters' thread - they were a bit surprised by it too - but obviously turned into a virtue. It wasn't. So don't berate those pointing it.

4. Obama against impeachment
Obama said he would not back such a move, although he has been distressed by the "loose ethical standards, the secrecy and incompetence" of a "variety of characters" in the administration.

"I think you reserve impeachment for grave, grave breaches, and intentional breaches of the president's authority," he (Obama) said.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2007-06-28-obama-impeachment_N.htm

This and other positions by Obama really makes me wonder about him, and just who he really is.
I think Obama is spineless, but he has a good happy talk going most of the time.

imo

6. Obama=Lover Edwards=Fighter
Obama thinks we all can get along and reach a grand compromise in moving towards a better future.

Edwards thinks it's going to take some serious nut-kicking of some less than willing participants (corporations) in making a better future.

12. Like he kicked nuts about our votes in 2004? "he wanted to, big bad Kerry didn't let him!"
I am waiting to see one fight he fought (not on his own behalf that is)

edwards did better last night than the polls indicated he would
very strong showing. obama may become overexposed and people tire of him. hillary may fade due to the clinton hangover. not that she wouldn't make a fine president, but i think if a lot of people had their druthers, there'd be no more clintons or bushes in the oval office.

edwards' message may begin to resonate with even more people. it's certainly a solid one that would bring back much of what's good about this country -- fairness, the american dream, the belief that you can get ahead. as far as resonating goes, my 79 year old mother who voted for nixon, ford, carter, reagan, bush (both times), clinton in 96, and bush in 2000, wants to know whom she can call to volunteer for edwards. she says republicans aren't good at anything except screwing young women and edwards is the one with values like hers.

my greatest fear is that edwards' message is so anti-corporate that the big corporations will shut him down. they have the money; therefore, they have the power.

john edwards had a successful career punching bullying corporations in the nose on behalf of people without access to power. goddamit, that's the kind of person i want in the white house.
