In Democratic circles, he is viewed as something of a giant slayer. Last fall, he defeated a 12-year Republican incumbent, Representative Charlie Bass in a district that stretches from the Massachusetts border to the northern tip of New Hampshire.
And, he’s a musician, recording rock-and-roll for more than two decades.
Of all the hundreds of elected officials in New Hampshire, Mr. Hodes is among the top three Democrats in the state. Gov. John Lynch and the state’s other member of Congress, Carol Shea Porter, round out the list.http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/07/25/obama-snags-nh-endorsement/----------------------
U.S. Rep. Carol Shea-Porter endorsed Barack Obama for President this afternoon, calling him “someone who can inspire the largest number of Americans to turn out for this critical election.”
UnionLeader.com first reported the endorsement yesterday. Shea-Porter made it official during a conference call with reporters this afternoon.
Obama said he was honored.
“Nobody spoke louder for change in 2006 than Carol did,” he said.
Shea-Porter, in an interview earlier today, said she informed Obama of her decision on Sunday evening shortly before both shared the Verizon Wireless Arena stage with Oprah Winfrey.
The freshman Democrat noted that she had initially said “that I would stay out of the primary unless there was something so compelling, and this is a compelling moment in time for this country.
“I felt that I have a voice and I needed to use it,” she said.
She said her enthusiasm for Obama prompted her to decide to end her neutrality in the primary campaign.
Obama “is going to reach out to the grass roots and bring a large turnout at the polls in the general election. He has an understanding and a touch that will unite us.
