You Know, We're Quite Lucky When You Think About It
Edited on Sun Jan-06-08 04:19 PM by Magic Rat
I've been thinking about this for a little while, and I've come to the conclusion that this year, we're all pretty blessed to be Democrats.

We have three candidates who pretty much all agree on every issue, with the only disagreements seeming to be on the presentation.

It's like walking into a resturant and finding all your favorite food on the menu, and just trying to choose on the type of plates and dinnerwear you want to eat with.

They all support abortion rights.
They all support gay rights.
They all support ending the war in Iraq.
They all support increasing health care.
They all support protecting the environment.
They all support repealing the Bush tax cuts.
They all support Social Security.

Read that again, they ALL support those things. They're ALL in agreement on these major issues.

What are we arguing about?

Whether we want someone with slightly more experience or someone who'll fight slightly harder or someone who'll offer slightly more hope?

Really, is this what we're fighting about?

The Republicans should be so lucky.

They can't even agree on a candidate they can tolerate, let alone embrace. We have three we can all at least tolerate, if not get genuinely excited about. The first woman president? The first black president? The first populist president in a generation?

These are great candidates!

Yeah, I know this post won't stop the fighting. But I hope it makes those who read it pause a little bit, maybe take a deep breath and realize that what separates these three isn't nearly as much as what unites them, and what unites all of us here a DU. A sincere belief that the country can be run better, and smarter, with a Democrat in office.

3. I'm not holding my breath
all of the items you mentioned can be done in degrees that won't make a difference. The war thing is a good example- 2011?

Increasing health care- by making me get insurance when I can't afford it, and giving me tax breaks that won't help me?

Would protecting the environment include shutting down companies that thrive due to pollution(factory pig farms, anyone?)?

I know you're trying to look on the bright side, but I want a Dem to vote for! Is that too much to ask?

4. I'm sure that any of them
will do what you want, to some degree. But then again, they're working against, and within, a system that will severely hamper their ability to do everything you, I or them want to do.

But just in terms of where they stand, they're much closer to you than the Republicans are.

5. Of course they're closer to me than the repuke candidates
but anyone would look good next to those POS's.

I'm glad you get the point, though. Our system does not represent us. Not good. Not good at all.

6. Gay Rights
The only two that favour same sex marriage are Kucinich and Gravel. They all support gay rights in limited quantities; for Gods' sake Richardson still thinks it's a choice.

Obama had an ex-gay preacher as part of his touring group...
