Rasmussen Reports Surprise!! John Edwards Up 9% (to 23%) Nationally Since 12/29

According to the latest Rasmussen Reports numbers, the anticipated Obama national bounce seems, instead, to be pointing John Edwards's way. The latest Rasmussen Daily Democratic Presidential tracking polls show that as of 1/6/2008, John Edwards has increased his percentage of likely US voters by +9 percentage points from 14% to 23%. This compares to Hillary Clinton's loss of -7 percentage points in the same period from 43% to 36% and Barack Obama's +1 point increase during the same period from 24% to 25%.

1/6/08 36% 25% 23%
1/5/08 38% 25% 20%
1/4/08 38% 26% 18%
1/3/08 41% 24% 17%
12/31/07-1/2/08 No polling - New Year's Holiday
12/30/07 42% 23% 16%
12/29/07 43% 24% 14%

NATIONAL AVERAGE: For the national race, Edwards’s improvement in the Rasmussen polling represents a +10.0% increase over the last six December polls averaged previously by Real Clear Politics. That same comparison shows Barack Obama with a -.75% decrease and Hillary Clinton with a –8.25% decrease in her national average--so all positive national movement in the Democratic Primary race seems to be in Edwards's favor.

NEW HAMPSHIRE: Edwards is also up 3.1% in New Hampshire over the past six polls averaged by Real Clear Politics. This is not as much as Obama, who’s up 8.7% in New Hampshire, but Hillary Clinton is down 4.8% during that same time.

State Clinton Obama Edwards

New Hampshire -4.8% +8.7% +3.1%

The Concord Monitor poll also came out Saturday and showed Barack Obama increasing his standing by +1% to 34% since the Monitor’s last poll on Dec. 18, while Hillary Clinton increased her poll numbers by +2% to 33%--and John Edwards increased his position by 5% to 23% in the same time period.

So, Edwards is moving up significantly in New Hampshire as well--and may make a further move after a very strong debate performance on ABC on Saturday night.

3. Edwards has been getting his message to the people via his
36 hour pushes in Iawa and New Hampshire. Middle class people are reporting information, and not the million dollar anchor spokespersons. Now that is what I call change.

11. I said this in 2004
Edwards needed to be given a chance he could not get in time. His appeal growing was/is true but again not enough, not enough time. We will never see the see the peak quite possibly. It might be one of those what ifs unless the people really seek to delve into edwards or his message. It would be untypical of most(enough) voters to do so, change and vote accordingly never mind the current leader is so eloquent and appealing himself.

The state of mind of most voters, even most Dem voters may not be up to, or simply too drowned out, to want more than Obama and his message. The Clinton string snapping gave further momentum to the first place guy.

I am starting to wonder how HRC goes on after New Hampshire...

I am beginning to believe Barack Obama is like tulip mania or the NASDAQ in the late nineties...

28. uhh no dear -- people were calling Iowa for Clinton
and it was a tossup on who came in 2nd and third. Considering John was outspent something like 6 to 1, he finished spectacularly.

17. It's what an Edwards supporter thinks of Obama supporters.
Even though Obama beat Hillary and Edwards in Iowa with people under the age of 55.

16. Look who benefits when Hillary support goes down.
Edwards! As Hillary's numbers go down, Edwards' numbers go up and Obama's stay almost constant.

H O E
36 25 23
38 25 20
38 26 18
41 24 17
43 23 16
43 24 14

So the natural thing for Edwards to do is go after Hillary. And for Obama as well for somewhat different reasons. From Hillary's perspective, she has to take out Edwards, and the media is helping by not reporting Edwards who they are scared of.

Obama supporters should be glad that Edwards is going all the way to the convention. It may be their only way to get there.

I'm still waiting to hear how Edwards can win NH, SC, NV, or any other state after being way down in every state poll.

21. Interesting that they didn't change dramatically after Iowa.
I would certainly expect Obama's national numbers to get a boost after NH, but if Edwards were to drop out, which he isn't going to do, that would firm up Hillary's lead, and make it very difficult for Obama.

Edwards has a huge task ahead, but there are some worsening socioeconomic conditions that will favor his candidacy in the next month or two. People are already hurting and just the whisper of recession is going to make them think of their pocket books, and what corporate America has done to them over the years of the Clinton/Bush dynasty. From NAFTA, to job outsourcing, to $100/barrel of oil. People are just beginning to take the election seriously. They're not DUers out there. They're going to want to hear substantive plans and soon.

22. Obama's numbers changed dramatically where he is campaigning(NH).
Maybe that should tell you something.

Obama got a huge boost in NH, where ALL of the candidates are campaigning, while Edwards numbers have stayed the same or dropped.

Obama +10 since Iowa
Hillary -4 since Iowa
Edwards +0 since Iowa
