Why are NH independent voters drifting towards McCain?
At some levels, I am perplexed by this. but it it may jusy be the prism we all look through.

I have been assuming that Obama was going to repolicate his cross-over appeal we saw in Iowa. But CNN says that ther trend amonf the 45% indy voters is toward McCain.

That is surpsiing due to the crowds Obama is seeing and hus 10% or so Iowa bump.

Why would NH indies be looking more favorably on McCain than Obama? Is it the position on the war? Ir is it an anti-Romney factor?

It may not matter all that much if the 10% bump holds, but the drift among indies is very interesting, If it was more substantial, Hillary could surprise tomorrow,

3. Many NH indies are conservative in their leanings.
Just because they are independent does not mean they are moderate.

Maybe they like Mc Cain and I guess they think he needs their support? Will be interesting to see what tomorrow holds.

9. Nothing is wrong with our state, which is now decidedly blue.

Our governor, both representatives are Democrats, we will send a Democrat to the Senate next year, we went for Kerry in '04. The days of NH as a red state are over. See:

11. Talk on local radio here is that McCain is in trouble with independents...
precisely because they are breaking for Obama, whereas in 2000 they broke for McCain.

14. I do.
For instance, cell phone users are not polled. The demographic of your candidate would tend to use cell phones much more than McCain's.

12. According to John Rothman of KGO San Francisco...
McCain has hung around in NH a lot over the years and has a batch of very powerful friends in the state. He is calling in all his IOUs and it shows.

I believe that Romney has a house in NH...perhaps he is cheap vis-a-vis his hired help.

15. The Republican race is more competitive
Independents can make more of a difference voting for McCain than for Obama. I am sure this is a big factor.

16. It's an open primary and polls show about two-thirds of indies are voting for Dems
so most of them are voting in the Dem primary primarily for Obama. They are not drifting towards McCain they have been drifting away from the GOP but those who are left favor McCain.

19. from CNN
Crucial to the outcome in New Hampshire are the state's independent voters, who make up around 40 percent of the electorate, and who can vote in either party's primary.

With time running out, 6 percent of likely Democratic primary voters and 5 percent of those likely to vote in the GOP primary remain undecided.

The poll indicates that a growing number of registered independents say they will vote in the GOP contest, which is a switch from just a month ago.

Whether independents decide to vote in the Democratic or Republican primaries could affect the outcome of both races, Schneider said, noting that McCain ties Romney among registered Republicans but has an 11-point lead when independent voters are included.

"So McCain is not just running against Romney. He's also running against Obama for independent support."
