Mark Penn stays in a supporting role.

Jennifer Donahue on Anderson Cooper is the source.

51. That is how it often is done
It's called a demotion, and a face saving formular is worked out. Penn has been a loyalist and to an extent they do not want to throw a loyalist completely overboard, which <gasp> actually has a human element to it. But in addition it is less disrupting to the internal campaign and external perceptions of it if they can announce a major "tune up" bolstering of it rather than a bloody purge - the latter has negative implications that can become a campaign negative by itself.

52. I've been posting here for a long time that Mark Penn was destroying her chances.
Speaking only to the political campaign, Mark Penn and Terry McAuliff have poisoned Hillary through their shoddy, old boy, corrupt politics.

Mark Penn tried to help the multinationals privatize drinking water in Bolivia. Much of the unrest there now is a result of Penn's nefarious activities.

Penn oversaw the Muslim smear against Obama.

Hillary needs to get rid of these creepy men. But then, I've posted this for a long, long time.

James is a sharp political strategist. I can't deny that.

But Penn? He's a loser and leaves messes everywhere he travels.

And McAuliff. The worst person in the world to have ever, ever been in charge of the Democratic Party. But he has raised a lot of money for the Clintons, so he gets to hang around and poison the well.

All three despise Howard Dean.

And carville's strategy to trash Dean after the 2006 elections didn't turn out so well. I know carville has won in the past but I feel this is something bigger and they don't have a clue. We'll see.. if we're meant to have more of the same or we get move in a new, positive direction.

Did Carville Tip Bush Off to Kerry Strategy (Woodward)
By M.J. Rosenberg | bio

?On page 344, Woodward describes the doings at the White House in the early morning hours of Wednesday, the day after the '04 election.

Apparently, Kerry had decided not to concede. There were 250,000 outstanding ballots in Ohio.

So Kerry decides to fight. In fact, he considers going to Ohio to camp out with his voters until there is a recount. This is the last thing the White House needs, especially after Florida 2000.

So what happened?

James Carville gets on the phone with his wife, Mary Matalin, who is at the White House with Bush.

Million Dollar Assholes: Carville, Shrum & Greenberg

-snip

I saw a documentary that blew me away today but I don't mean in a good way. It was called Our Brand is Crisis, about how the firm of Carville, Greenberg and Shrum (as in James Ragin' Cajun Carville and Bob $5 million man Shrum) travel around the world meddling in political situations they know little about for fun and profit when they're not busy losing Presidential elections.

The film takes place in the Bolivian election of 2002, when Carville et. al. convinced the Bolivian people they needed to elect Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada, aka Goni, an American-born candidate who speaks Spanish with an accent and who had failed miserably once before as President during the 90s. He is elected by the thinnest of margins, only to be forced to resign 14 months later amid riots that left 100 people dead.

Yes?

74. I read something today that said the Clinton-Penn relationship
goes back to 1994 and is much closer than just campaign manager stuff.

Apparently the three of them (Bill, Hillary and Mark Penn) are tight as ticks.

Someone named Doyle is Hillary's campaign manager, so I guess Carville will replace her.

Penn is staying on.

He was her campaign's advisor before, and he will remain so.

But this... might just turn her back into my 5th choice, behind Edwards. :(

It is actually a fact that gonorrhea really isn't as bad as syphilis.

89. She kept Penn and took Carville for the position instead?
The fact that she kept Penn on board, shows me she doesn't have a clue what to do.

And Carville is about as slimy as it gets. And his freakish wife working for that dolt Thompson. I hate their fucking DC media cocktail circuit marriage. Yuck.

Carville will go for the jugular.

It will, of course, backfire.

92. Speaking strictly for myself, James Carville and his extremely Republican wife
Edited on Tue Jan-08-08 02:14 AM by Old Crusoe
are exactly the sort of folks from the Clinton era I find most objectionable.

This is exactly why I'm not a Clinton Democrat.

This is not to say that Carville is a fool -- he is not. He's tough and smart and may even help her for all I know, but the affiliation of "bipartisan Beltway couple" on the Sunday talk shows have been a huge turn-off for me since the mid-90s.

Senator Clinton is praised by E J Dionne in these final hours of the New Hampshire primary for being extraordinarily well-prepared for the presidential race:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/01/07/AR2008010702263.html?nav%3Dhcmodule&sub=AR
--but IMO, she should have looked to entirely different variables and temperaments in a campaign team and instead she hauls out her husband's hacks and several hangers-on, now to include Carville.

When the car's stuck in the mud, flooring it just spins the wheels and splatters people trying to push you back on the highway.

Again, just speaking for myself, but I think Sen. Clinton should have made a wholesale change with non-Clinton-era additions and replacements.

94. As a fan of political train wrecks....
...I can't tell you how happy this makes me.

Hillary will not go quietly into the night. This I expected. I did not expect her to go down in flames, screaming the whole way. It's either that or win. This can end only one of those two ways.

McCaulife denied that the Clinton campaign was strapped for money, but admitted they were raising money for Tsunami Tuesday showdown on Feb 5.

98. TPM: no Deal with Clinton Careville or Begala. Its confirmed not gonna happen
I just reached Carville on his cell. Here's what he had to say about this:

"Fox was, is and will continue to be an asinine and ignorant network. I have not spoken to anyone in the Clinton campaign about this. I have not done domestic political consulting since President Clinton was elected. I'm not getting back into domestic political consulting. If I do go back, it would be safe to say that I'm the biggest liar in America."

Asked if he knew whether Begala would be coming back, Carville continued:

"To the extent that I know anything, as of nine this morning, no he is not."

Oh, well. There goes that narrative.

Late Update: Ben Smith gets a denial from Begala, too: "As I say to the boys: N.H.D. Not Happenin' Dude."
