Snopes addresses the Obama myths.

Apparently, this is their most popular set of myths right now.

1. Since when has it been the thing to do to put one's hand over heart for the Nat'l Anthem?
Edited on Tue Jan-08-08 11:38 AM by Whoa_Nelly
Growing up ('50s-60s) always was understood that standing for the anthem was what to do, and hand over heart was for the pledge of allegience.

Anyone know about hand over heart for the anthem???

(This post per Snopes that Obama did NOT have his hand over heart for the anthem)

on edit: Just want to note that I HAVE seen this action at baseball games when the anthem is sung, and find it strange.
I never participate in putting hand over heart during that, and some people give me very nasty looks.

3. That's what I've always done too, but...
according to the US code, here's the proper behavior:
(a) Designation.— The composition consisting of the words and music known as the Star-Spangled Banner is the national anthem.
(b) Conduct During Playing.— During a rendition of the national anthem—
(1) when the flag is displayed—
(A) all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart;
(B) men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold the headdress at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart; and
(C) individuals in uniform should give the military salute at the first note of the anthem and maintain that position until the last note; and
(2) when the flag is not displayed, all present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed.

News to me!

4. Thanks for the info
I will probably continue to simply stand during the anthem.
As it is, I have a difficult time pledging my allegiance to a flag, and always skip the words "under God" as am an atheist.
During both (anthem and pledge) have always felt uncomfortable in being part of the sheeple.
Patriotism, to me, is action, not ritual.

2. The malicious Astroturf emailers are out in force now
and people who aren't as nasty as I am about junk emails are telling me they're getting three or four of them a day.

This is what you do. Cite Snopes. Reply to all. State if the sender pollutes your email with one more unresearched slander of any candidate on either side, you will put him on block. If he needs to contact you, he can try the phone, a visit, or snail mail. Then DO IT.

You might also want to block your email completely over the weekend for all the other people who also hit "reply all." It's the only way to get rid of them.
