ABC News: New Hampshire Turnout 'Absolutely Huge' (SoS sending out extra ballots)
Edited on Tue Jan-08-08 01:03 PM by EarlG
ABC News' Karen Travers Reports: New Hampshire Deputy Secretary of State Dave Scanlan told ABC News that turnout among primary voters today is "absolutely huge" -- and there are concerns about running out of ballots in towns like Portsmouth, Keene, Hudson and Pelham.

"Turnout is absolutely huge and towns are starting to get concerned that they may not have enough ballots," Scanlan said. "We are working on those issues. Everything else seems to be going smoothly." Scanlan said that the Secretary of State's office is sending additional ballots to Portsmouth and Keene (traditionally Democratic strongholds), Hudson (Republican leaning with significant numbers of independents) and Pelham (large number of independents).

According to Scanlan, the ballot strain seems to be on Democratic ballots, which suggests that the undeclared voters are breakng for the Democratic primary. New Hampshire Secretary of State William Gardner predicted that 90,000 undeclared voters would vote in the Democratic primary compared to 60,000 voting in the Republican primary.

and Gardener's been SoS for over 30 years. You'd think he'd have it down by now.

Having said that, this is wonderful news.

and that Sec of State is scrambling to procure additional Democratic ballots.

38. If turnout far exceeds projections
A shortage of ballots is almost always going to happen.

What we need to wait and see is by how far the turnout exceeded the projections before we assume they were in error.

40. This may help Hillary -
It's the old folks who are up at the crack of dawn, and will be the bulk of the early-morning voters. By the time the kids come out to vote for Obama, because of this problem, they may face (gasp) LINES at their polling places! Today's kids don't stand in lines - they may give up and leave.

46. You might be right, we'll have to see if Obama can attain the expected double-digit victory.
To be honest, I'm hoping someone starts spreading a rumor to the kids that they don't actually have to show up to vote - they just have to "text" BHO to some number on their cellphones (with their thumbs of course.) Enough of them might fall for that.
