Huffpo: Clinton Allies May Dump Millions Into Anti-Obama Group
Edited on Tue Jan-08-08 01:22 PM by debatepro

A panicked and cash-short Clinton campaign is seriously considering giving up on the Nevada caucuses and on the South Carolina primary in order to regroup and to save resources for the massive 19-state mega-primary on February 5.

At the same time, some top independent expenditure groups supporting Clinton have been exploring the creation of an anti-Obama "527 committee" that would take unlimited contributions from a few of Clinton's super-rich backers and from a handful of unions to finance television ads and direct mail designed to tarnish the Illinois Senator's image.
...
Three groups conducting independent expenditure campaigns in behalf of Clinton - Emily's List, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) - have explored the possibility of trying to put together a multi-million dollar effort privately dubbed the Anybody-But-Obama 527 Committee, but they have run into problems finding any Democratic operative willing to become the director of a campaign against the man who now is the odds-on favorite to become the party's nominee.

It's not the supporters, it's the contributors.
Although, outside technicality, they're the same people.

Hillary said that she wanted a democrat to win more than anything.
If so, why is she doing this?

And aren't some of these tactics - the OLD, not the NEW?
How can she be about change?

terrible things about Hillary come out of Edwards and Obama's mouths. Don't think the neocons won't pick up on all this in the GE. The average American doesn't like negative campaigns and Obama and Ewards have done plenty. If all this crap doesn't stop we may wind up with a Repb or Indy. Pres. if Bloomberg throws his had in.

16. This is still heresy
And even if someone in her campaign is seriously considering this or that it doesn't mean this or that has been decided on and/or signed off on by the candidate.

Having said that I still deplore that negative campaigning over the last decade or two has proved to be generally more effective than positive campaigning. I still deplore the power of money, and a system riddled with financial loop holes inviting exploitation.

My bottom line for negative campaigning is that people get their facts straight, that the people employing negative campaigns be clearly identifiable, that the source of funds used in negative campaigns be traceable well before an actual vote takes place, and that the organizations that form such 527 committees not be will 'o the wisps that spring up a few weeks before and then evaporate after the votes are held. They must be real groups with real members capable of becoming outraged and holding their leaders accountable if something deplorable is done in their name. Groups like Emily's List and Unions qualify as real by that definition.

Pretty low-class of Hillary. It's pretty clear that if she doesn't win the Nomination, she has plans of bringing down the party with her. This type of swiftboating should be reserved for the Repukes, they need a taste of their own medicine.

Obama's campaign planted this. And why would they? They have all the momentum in the world. They don't need to do things like this, they just need to keep winning states. Hillary is hurting her campaign all by herself.. she doesn't need Obama's help.

1. Wealthy donors are already capped out for contributions to the Hillary campaign.
2. New donors and smaller donors are drying up.
3. Need a way to stay competitive and stem the momentum heading into Feb 5.
