Obama has been in the US Senate for 3 years?
Edited on Thu Jan-10-08 05:49 PM by Proud2BAmurkin
I didn't know this. Sworn in on January 4, 2005. Is a record of three years in the US Senate going to be an issue in the presidential race?

on edit: 3 years in the Senate, one half term.

And he's got decades of good service to real people and good judgement. That's the kind of experience we need.

Obama Absent From AARP Forum
By Katharine Q. Seelye

Senator Barack Obama is skipping tonight’s televised forum in Iowa for the Democratic presidential candidates but he might be putting himself at risk with an important voting bloc.

The event is being co-sponsored by AARP. And as it happens, people over 50 — AARP’s membership — made up more than half of the voters in 2004 in the Iowa caucuses.

Mr. Obama has said he would not be driven to attend the myriad events that various groups are holding for the candidates because they are so time-consuming. (yeah, I guess it would have cut into his college events....)

Still, he is hoping to reach some of those older voters with a new television commercial in Iowa. It says his mother died at 53 of cancer “and those last painful months, she was more worried about paying her medical bills than getting well.”
In a vague allusion to Senator Hillary Clinton, who introduced her health-care plan in Iowa on Monday, he said: “For 20 years, Washington’s talked about health-care reform and reformed nothing.”

He adds: “I’ve got a plan to cut costs and cover everyone.” While Mr. Obama’s plan would expand coverage, however, it has been criticized for not covering everyone.

Tonight’s event, a 90-minute forum devoted to health care and financial security, is taking place in Davenport and is sponsored by AARP and Iowa Public Television. It is to be aired on public television stations across the country.

Not in my view. Especially when there are 78 million baby boomers. I guess Iowans didn't care about this...and I just don't think enough people know about this. Yet. He avoids this age group like the plague. Maybe he doesn't want it reminding him of how old he is....

30. She has 7 years in the U.S. Senate to his three
Yes, his time as a legislator in Illinois counts, but that's like being in the minor leagues compared to being in the majors. And it gave him no foreign policy creds. In addition, she didn't bake cookies in the White House. She was a key advisor, particularly on domestic policy issues. The health care thing may have been a failure, but it wasn't baking cookies. Madeline Albright and others have said that her work internationally, particularly on women's and children's issues was important. And yeah, I know Albrght supports Clinton but I remember those years.

31. Yeah, but she's not running for U.S. Senate.
He's got seven years in State Senate to her zero, not to mention the years as a community organizer, a civil rights lawyer, and constitutional scholar. I'll agree that Clinton has four more years of foriegn policy experience, but that involves invading Iraq, which is not exactly something to be proud of. Claiming her first ladyship as experience strikes me as about as important as being George Bush Sr.'s son.

Con Law and as a community organizer, how can we possibly not count her years working on childrens's issues in Arkansas and before, her work as counsel to a Watergate Panel, her work as counsel to the Children's Defense Fund, and her work on Healthcare in the White House? Did georgie head a major domestic policy initiative? No. Did Clinton? Yes. And that wasn't the only policy she was involved in. Like it or hate it, Bill Clinton wasn't just whistling when he said "you get two for the price of one".

She has more experience.

25. ok smarty pant..here is what YOUR OBAMA has been up to since Big People Senate!!
“4/21/05: Obama voted for HR 1268, war appropriations in the amount of approximately $81 billion. Much of this funding went to Blackwater USA and Halliburton and disappeared. Roll call 109 (Passed 99-0)

“10/07/05: Obama voted for HR2863, which appropriated $50 billion in new money for war. Roll call 254 (Passed 97-0)

“11/15/05: Obama voted the Defense Authorization Act (S1042) which kept the war and war profiteering alive, restricted the right of habeas corpus and encouraged terrorism. Pursuant to his pattern, Obama voted for this. Roll call 326 (Passed 98-0)

“12/21/05: Obama confirmed his support for war by voting for the Conference Report on the Defense Appropriations Act (HR 2863), which provided more funding to Halliburton and Blackwater. Roll call 366 (Passed 93-0)

“5/4/06: Obama, again, voted to adopt HR4939: emergency funding to war profiteers. Roll call 112 (Passed 77-21, all Democrats voting for it)

“6/13/06: Obama voted to commend the armed services for a bombing that killed innocent people and children and reportedly resulted in the death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi… Michael Berg, whose son was reportedly killed by al-Zarqawi, condemned the attack and expressed sorrow over the innocent people and children killed in the bombing that Obama commended. Roll call 168 (Passed 97-0)

“6/15/06: Obama voted for the conference report on HR4939, a bill that gave warmongers more money to continue the killing and massacre of innocent people in Iraq and allows profiteers to collect more money for scamming the people of New Orleans. Roll Call 171 (Passed 98-1, with all Democrats voting for it)

“6/22/06: Obama again voted for continued war by voting to pass the National Defense Authorization Act (S 2766) for continued war funding. Roll Call 186 (Passed 96-0)

“9/29/06: Obama voted vote for the conference report on more funding for war, HR 5631. Roll Call 261 (Passed 100-0)

“12/06/06: Obama voted to confirm pro-war Robert M. Gates to be Secretary of Defense. Gates is a supporter of Bush's policies of pre-emptive war and conquest of foreign countries. Roll Call 272 (Passed 95-2, with every Democrat voting for it)

“Obama's voting record in 2007 establishes that he continues to be pro-war. On March 28, 2007 and March 29th, 2007, he voted for cloture and passage of a bill designed to give Bush over $120 billion to continue the occupation for years to come (with a suspendable time table) and inclusive of funding that could be used to launch a war with Iran. Roll calls 117 (Passed 97-0) and 126 (Passed 51-47, with every Democrat voting for it)

50. yes cali. your right...
I have read many of your post and find you informed and fair...I am simply trying to make the point to some who keep repeating "Hillary voted for the WAR" and Obama didn't..He had ample opportunity to vote AGAINST continuing to fund it. He voted for war appropriations giving our money to Halliburton and Blackwater.

Obama's vote as a U.S. Senator was in support of confirming Condoleezza Rice as Secretary of State.(((HOPE))) He also voted to confirm John Negroponte as Director of National Intelligence,(((CHANGE))) despite Negroponte's involvement in Iran-Contra and other issues that are certainly questionable. Obama also voted for a bill to limit citizens rights to seek legal redress against abusive corporations. During the bankruptcy debate, he helped VOTE DOWN a Democratic amendment to cap the abusive interest rates credit card companies could charge. And now, Obama has cast a KEY procedural vote in support of President Bush's right-wing judges.A BIG Lieberman supporter..kiss kiss..

Obama is supposed to be different - he was supposed to be The Hope and Change Candidate...These are NOT the "CHANGES WE NEED." Not kind I want!!!

36. Do you know why you suck?
Because, like all people for whom the ends justify the means, "its how you play the game" is a "quaint" notion. So on social websites like DU, rather than engage in debate that might have alerted you to Obama's senate tenure, you would rather sow discord. I do pity folks who get really angry and allow you to influence their emotions in a negative way, but that's what turns you on isn't it?

Maybe this is just an online persona, or maybe not. Maybe you are a member of that select group that decides they're on a "team", identifies with that membership to the point where you lose sight of right and wrong.

I could go on but this was 5 minutes I'll never get back...
