Where is "The Centre" in American politcs?
The answer I would give is that there is no good answer. For a term to be well-defined, it has to be the case not merely that a definition exists, but that not more than one definition is in common use.

One definition would be to look at the American political spectrum in isolation, in which case the centre is probably somewhere around Joe Lieberman or Lincoln Chafee. Everyone left of that could be term "left-wing", and everyone to the right "right-wing".

Another is to look at it in the context of the political spectrums. In this context, the centre is somewhere in the middle of the Democratic party. Dennis Kucinich would probably be considered a left-winger even here in the UK, but Joe Lieberman probably wouldn't; pretty much all elected Democrats fall between those two, I think.

Which if any of the three presidential candidates would be is a question that would cause a wonderful flame war, so I don't propose to address it...

Given multiple arguably-valid definitions, the word - and other words like "moderate" and "extremist" - are not well defined. If you want to use one, please make clear at the same time exactly what you mean by it.

1. Where it actually is?
Or where the corporatocracy propagandizes for & wants it to be?

2. Your use of "centre" screams not from USA, and just trying to ferret out our
secrets. Probably a BBC reporter who is looking for a scoop. Also none of this may be the case, but just my first impression. You see we know what the the center is, but either you know it or you just don't get it. Sort of like trying to figure out why the kids go crazy about this Hannah Montana teen idol.

4. Somewhere between the "Theatre" and the "Colour" and "Fibre" of its "Defence"
Welcome to America. We don't speak English here.

5. The Center?
Edited on Fri Jan-11-08 10:18 PM by The River
It's sitting on the sofa watching an idealized simulacrum of America
on TV as it consumes thrice the calories it needs.
It's at Wal-Mart buying cheap crap it doesn't need to
satisfy internal needs it doesn't understand.
It's in mega-churches and synagogues believing, somehow, that
the separate ego self survives even if the body does not.
Just follow the rules and everything will be OK!
It's sitting around the kitchen table trying to figure
out how to pay for both food and rent, hoping it doesn't
lose its job or get sick.
The Center is the majority of Americans, to busy,
too distracted and too conditioned to really notice
whats happening to their Country.

on edit: I've never been East of Cape Cod but
I prefer (and use) "English" spelling.
It's just more elegant.

7. Unfortunately, it's moved to the right in recent decades
Extreme right-wingers, who would have once been considered part of the lunatic fringe, are now running our country. :scared:
