It's 2008. "Hip Black Friend" isn't racist and everybody knows it.
Unless you think it's a negative to be "hip" or "black" then "hip black friend" isn't racist. There's nothing negative about the phrase and if it's racist at all it's racist toward the kind of non hip WHITE people who want hip friends.

It hasn't been racist since 1977 to acknowledge black people are probably more hip than white people and it's damn sure not racist in 2007 when every suburban white kid tries to be hip by imitating looks and music and slang brought into the culture first by blacks.

Cut it out already. It's backfiring because everyone knows it's not racist.

1. When was it racist in 1977?

2. Before about that time there was the idea that people shouldn't focus on differences and
only focus on "sameness" because there were so many ARchie Buncker cartoon racists who would try to equate any differences with "bad." We're way past that point and people who thought that way have died off.

I remember when women used to care if you said "chicks" but they don't now. Same thing, enough change has taken place that nobody tries to iron over all differences.

9. I remember "watermelon" references that by themselves weren't racist but
were used by racists to imply something negative, they thought the mere idea of liking watermelon was joke worthy.

28. Like this one?

Clinton, 19 at the time and a sophomore at Georgetown University, wrote: “Dear Mammaw, Thought I would send you one of your cards just to prove I’m using them! My tests are over and I’m just starting the second term. Hope you are well and happy … Love, Bill.”

But then again, I'm not anybody's "hip white friend".

10. It's not cultural difference-- it's racial difference
It smells suspicious as hell.

Why the fuck would anybody CARE what color your friend is? Do you say "my crippled friend" when you talk about an acquaintance that uses a wheelchair?

15. I know plenty of "unhip" black people
But then again they're actual BLACK people, not stereotypes of what white people THINK black people are or "should be".

19. Context is important
The alleged statement from the Clinton advisor has caused a hullabaloo because it reduced Obama to a stereotype and it diminished/insulted Obama supporters and his campaign.

Just because a stereotype is "positive" doesn't mean it is any less harmful than a "negative" one. All it does is create issues for those who do not fit whatever "positive" stereotype in question.

Finally, the statement reminds people (yet again) that Obama is black. Thankfully, Obama himself has remained above the fray, but pointing out Obama's ethnicity in the context of negative statements seems to have the purpose of removing the transcendental nature of Obama's campaign and persona for many Americans.

29. Would you refer to someone as my "hip WHITE friend"?
No you wouldn't. So to inject race into the phrase is racist on its face. You can deny it all you want but it is what it is.
