Can there be a conversation on DU
about Racism and Sexism

I think that they are both important issues. Racism and Sexism exist in the good ole USofA.

I do believe Hillary is a victim of sexism and I believe Obama to be a victim of racism, not necessarily from the camps of these candidates, but the American population in general.

I tried to have this conversation before, but was basically told that race did not matter and I should be ashamed of myself for bringing it up, and then that turned into me being called a racist for daring to discuss it. So which is it, is there racism or not?

I have been told that Hillary's gender is fair game, that it one's opinion of her and just because people think she's a bitch, crybaby, shrill and a cold hearted woman, I shouldn't be so sensitive. But I have lived as a woman for many years and I think I can recognize it when I see it.

So can we have an adult conversation regarding racism and sexism in the US or not? Please don't tell me that none of this matters, it's going to be all that matters, wait and see.

1. Not conducive. BBS flattens out personalities into cartoon characters.

Lack of face to face contact dooms us to misunderstanding and pettiness. The worst possible interpretation of every comment is made.

Probably impossible.

2. We're far too intelligent for that.
Our opinions are too nuanced. Too finely crafted. Too informed by the postmodern hermeneutic of progressive jouissance.

In other words,

Hillary Sucks! She's the KKKorpr0ate KKKandidate!

Obama Sucks! He's the KKKorpr0ate KKKandidate!

Where's my damn Robert Johnson CDs, bitch?

3. Sadly, I doubt it will happen
based on the responses of some so-called "liberals" and "progressives" and their "hip black friends", I have a feeling you'll only get these guys to show up:

5. Good idea.
I'd take part in such a discussion. I think it could be interesting, and positive.

6. I would play as well.
We do need to discuss this rationally as Democrats - BEFORE the Rovian Repubs turn the conversation in the direction THEY want it to go.

I, for one, refuse to bash my fellow Dems about sexism or racism unless they are obviously going along with it and even then I will probably just point out the error of their ways.

7. Judging by the amount of comments and when take a gander out there in GDPP
It sadly, does not appear that people are ready for this conversation, but it really does need to take place.

9. The conversation has been had.....
and it will be had again.

Currently some of us are concentrating on an election.

We are sure that racism will be back as a topic of conversation before we know it.

Till then....

8. I would love to talk about the language, media sterotyping and life experiences that contribute to
to our POV's.

It's a matter of how willing to be vulnerable we are, even on an anonymous message board.

I'm game. MKJ
