After lambasting him on MTP, Hillary goes to church and says she is "proud" of Obama
Clinton is 'Proud' of Obama
January 13, 2008 1:24 PM

ABC News' Eloise Harper reports: After an hour-long television interview critiquing Sen. Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton went to an African American church, where the only words she had for her democratic rival -- were of praise.

Clinton, who attended services in a predominately African-American Church in Columbia, S.C., spoke about the presidential race.

"We never thought we would see the day when an African-American and a woman were competing for the presidency," Clinton said. "I am so proud of my party I am so proud of my country and I am so proud of Sen. Barack Obama."

Clinton delivered her remarks to the audience and noted Martin Luther King's upcoming birthday. Clinton has been enveloped in a firestorm about comments she made about King in recent days. Clinton did not address the issue -- but longtime Clinton friend Bob Johnson, founder of BET, commented to reporters.

Johnson, who accompanied Clinton to church, criticized Obama for allowing his campaign (as he described it) to distort what Clinton was saying.

"Barack knows better than that, why he would let his people let that come out just shows to me either he is not in control of what they are saying or he's allowing them to say it knowing it's wrong," Johnson said.

6. Do you think this shows you
what kind of leader she'll be or what type of policies she'll promote if she becomes president?

I think that's the core question I keep coming back to when I read anything negative about Hillary, Obama or Edwards. The honest answer is often "no", at least for me.

At any rate, this article offers some interesting questions about Hillary's leadership (that don't focus on BS non-issues like her gender, her laugh, etc.):

26. Wow, it doesn't seem to matter whether she is "bashing" or "complimenting" Obama,
Perhaps you could send Hillary a script so she can get it right. Frankly I see a lot of excuses made for Obama and see a lot of pandering to him because he is African-American. I will hold him to the same standards as the rest of the candidates. I am thrilled that we have him and Hillary running. I believe it says a lot for where our country is right now. My problem with Obama is that he is way too young and inexperienced to deal with the problems we are facing today. He needs more knowledge and growth to be President. If he receives the nomination, I do not believe he will be elected.

Frankly, I am also suspicious of his following. Young people, I believe, were given the vote too young. I also do not believe they should be able to join the armed services at this age, nor should they be allowed to drink. Young people, of course, believe they are infinitely wiser than their elders, and we have had a bunch screaming insults on these forums. There is a reason why we try to protect the young. They lack judgment and wisdom. They are also very vulnerable to cults and peer pressure because they are easily swayed and do not have experience to help them make decisions. That said, I appreciate your views, as you obviously have some life experience to go on. Nevertheless, we should all try to look deeper for the reasons our guts tell us to vote for a candidate or not. I know I'm still trying to validate my reasoning for my support of Hillary. So far, her pluses outweigh her minuses as far as I am concerned.

Good luck to you.

29. Thank you for the thoughtfulness and civility of your response.
I really mean that. It seems to be in short supply these days.

You are correct in your assumption that Hillary is damned if she does or damned if she doesn't in these situations. There is no winning exit strategy for her once an argument like this begins. Her only safe course is to avoid such racially charged conversations to begin with, but as a fellow liberal, I know how hard that can be for her to resist.

I am a little concerned about your generalization concerning young people. While they do seem to be leaning toward Obama, they are far from the entirety of his support. In fact, most of his support is probably from people over 30.

And who's to say that young people are universally misguided? In 1972, at the tender age of seventeen going on eighteen, I did more than my share of stupid things. In retrospect, some of them were probably life threatening stupid. I remember very well being both invulnerable and omniscient.

But I also remember picking McGovern over Nixon, and marching in staunch opposition to a pointless war, and teaching seminars on the very first Earth Day. There were quite a few people my same age who agreed with me, back then. Were we so misguided or wrong to be paying attention and getting involved?

I wonder how many realize it for what it is........ like Barbara Walters touching Brandy's hair.

Obama worked his ass off to be the creme of his graduating class. He has accomplishments out the wazoo. He runs circles around Hillary 'I failed the DC bar exam and need my philandering Oxford educated husband in order to get anywhere' Rodham.

She doesn't respect him. But she thinks she's in a position to pat him on the head.

(edited word... because I read Kristi's post below. sorry, you all.)

Yes, I'm being disrespectful to her, and my disrespect does not help the situation; my disrespect is not professional; it is not positive.

But she actally thinks blacks are going to fall for her bullsh*t. She may be right, if they don't have internet access and the only thing they have to go on is newspapers and clergy and so-called leaders who are in her pocket.

We need to get the word out.

39. I guess you believe 'Aunt' and 'Uncle' are terms of endearment, too,
Instead of insults.

But perhaps you can explain why you feel it's wrong to take exception to a grown woman saying she's 'proud' of a grown man, instead of saying she respects that grown man.

When someone says they're proud of you, what position are they in, in relation to you?

Would you rather have your co-workers be proud of you, or say that they respect you?

Would you rather your boss be proud of you, or respect you?

aunt and uncle aren't racial epithets either... until they're used as such, benevolent racial epithets to be sure, said in what passes for love... but still epithets, with no real respect attached.

you haven't explained why you feel that Hillary was being sincere in using the word 'proud'. you just stated that it wouldn't make sense for Hillary to say she respected Obama.... next to respecting the country.

Here's that quote for you.

41. Context says she feels Obama has overreached.
Why place proud of party country and Obama together in the same sentence?

How would that have read, if someone had said;

"i am proud of my party, I am proud of my country, and I am proud of First Lady Rodham Clinton"

Proud of her for what?

Proud of the party and the country for what? in relation to that?

Saying one is proud of First Lady Rodham Clinton, in that case, is saying that you never expected her to go that far in the first place... it was beyond your expectations for her. So now, you're proud of the party for having her in it, you're proud of the country for accepting her, and you're proud of her for exceeding expectations.

But what position is Hillary in to say that Obama has exceeded her expectations of him? and to say that at a predominantly black church. This goes right up there with her announcing that she would not mind having Colin Powell in her cabinet..... but she only announced it in the 'safety' of a predominantly black audience.

She's a panderer, guacamole, chips and all.

Meanwhile, Obama says he would a) not mind having Bill as part of Obama's administration and b) would not mind having respected Republicans as part of his administration. What 'safe' audience did he make those comments in front of?

Again, to be proud -- *if you're in Hillary's position* -- is to say someone exceeded expectations... but you don't really expect them to go further. You're head patting.

Far better for her to respect this man her husband publically calls 'kid'.

50. Blech. Typical Hillary. Makes me wanna hurl.
Edited on Sun Jan-13-08 04:17 PM by dkf
Edwards said something along this line but his words were so much more heartfelt and genuine.

It was really generous and gentlemanly.

How is it that Hillary's words are so barfable?

52. I liked it better around here during that brief moment when the Obama people thought they could win.

58. Dig it! I was excited too
I like Obama or Hillary and gave both of them money this week. I am shocked at the horrible vile venom from these people - it's one of the most disgusting displays of pure hate that I've ever witnessed in my lifetime.
