Obama Camp's Memo on Clintons' Politicizing Race
January 12, 2008 01:15 PM

Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign has prepared a detailed memo listing various instances in which it perceived Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign to have deliberately played the race card in the Democratic primary.

The memo, which was obtained by the Huffington Post and has been made public elsewhere, is believed to have been given to an activist and contains mostly excerpts from different media reports. It lists the contact info and name of Obama's South Carolina press secretary, Amaya Smith, and is broken down into five incidents in which either Clinton, her husband Bill, or campaign surrogates made comments that could be interpreted as racially insensitive.

The document provides an indication that, in private, the Obama campaign is seeking to capitalize on the view - and push the narrative - that the Clintons are using race-related issues for political leverage. In public, the Obama campaign has denied that they are trying to propagate such a perception, noting that the document never was sent to the press.

But irrespective of the memo, the image of the Clinton campaign sowing racial discord did bubble to the surface following a series of comments made this past week. On Friday, Bill Clinton called into multiple African American radio shows, including one hosted by Al Sharpton, to tamp down backlash against him for calling Obama's candidacy a "fairy tale."

In the memo, the Obama campaign highlights these "fairy tale" remarks and notes that Donna Brazile, Al Gore's 2000 campaign manager, "lashed into Bill Clinton" for them. The Clinton campaignhas said that the former president was referring to Obama's position on the Iraq. And indeed, Clinton made his remarks in the context of discussing criticism of the war.

1. You would prefer that he not respond to the insinuations?
in each of these incidents initiated by the Clinton camp? That would
make it so much easier for her to win. Obama lie down and roll over so Clinton can
have the nomination.

These charges are the blatant blame-the-victim tactics that are so often used by bullies.
Do the Clintons really want to be seen in this light?

3. That was an internal memo, and wasn't leaked by the campaign.

6. Obama: "...if I catch you guys doing any kind of stuff like this you're fired. Period."
http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2007/12/barack-dont-pla.html

December 14, 2007 4:40 PM

Per ABC News' Sunlen Miller, today on the Tom Joyner Radio Show, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, was asked what he thought about (now former) Clinton campaign co-chair Billy Shaheen raising the subject of his youthful drug use.

“I take the Clinton campaign's word that they didn't know what this guy was doing and I understand all that," Obama said, "but the one thing I will say is I told my staff that if I catch you guys doing any kind of stuff like this you're fired. Period."

"And I think what we need to do -- and I told this to senator Clinton yesterday -- is that we need to send a strong message to all of our surrogates and all of our staffs, that we don't play that," he said. "I know my staff has gotten that message because it's one that I delivered several months ago and I haven't seen that come out of their mouths."

7. Have you actually read the memo? Nowhere does it call these "talking points".
It simply gives the background on the events of the past week or so, presumably to get people up-to-speed in case they're asked about them.

Nowhere does it say to either bring the incidents up -OR- what to say about them if asked. In case you don't know, that's pretty important in a "talking points" memo.

8. Maybe it was just to inform their own people

what the media was talking about when they were calling things racist?

We had someone from the national party come down here a month ago and I was surprised how we actually knew more about certain things than they did. Like how act blue donations to Edwards couldn't be matched. Apparently this person didn't get a memo and was unaware of what was going on.

10. Start with the Clintons, who did the race baiting. Stop the lies.
The Clinton campaign baited for a week... then try to slam Obama on this.

It's disgusting.

Democrats deserve to lose everything after this disgraceful behavior, if they push her ahead. =(
