As somebody who finds Hillary Clinton 2.0 unconscionable and only barely supports Obama I find the racism and sexism allegations being thrown around absolutely not only unhelpful but highly destructive. Identity politics are always destructive.
Nobody is looking to vote for a professional victim for president and attempts to draw the campaign into discussions of racism and sexism doesn’t help anybody. If anything the rhetoric being thrown around by democrats could potentially gives the Republicans priceless soundbytes by which to slander whoever becomes the Democratic candidate.
Overreactions to the asinine discussion of racism and sexism can be edited into attack ads that will make Clinton look like a hysterical feminist stereotype or Obama look like Al Sharpton.
The success of both figures comes not out of identity politics but out of wide mainstream support, bringing issues of race and sex into the discussion – especially in the hysterical form they are being presented here only hurts them both whomever the candidate should be.
Is Hillary Clinton a segregation supporting white supremacist? Is Barak Obama an American version of Jacob Zuma?
I have a hard time anyone here, or any democrat seriously believes either.
I oppose Hillary Clinton because of her record as a senator and her enthusiastic cooperation with George W. Bush. The fact she is a woman doesn’t come into it - I have a shit list of male democrats in the dozens.
But dragging this race into the outhouse pit of identity politics is something the eventual nominee will never recover from as whichever of those losers is the Republican canidate will have months worth of gender and racial rhetoric that American find nausiating to throw in their face. "Obama is the black canidate" or "Hillary is the womyns canidate" while the Republican media machine makes whichever rich dude, huckster, transvestite or dead body look like the represenative of every American, baseball and apple pie.
