ABC: Obama Damps Down Racial Controversy
Edited on Mon Jan-14-08 06:21 PM by Bleachers7
ABC News' David Wright, Andy Fies, and Sunlen Miller Report: Sen. Barack Obama told ABC News Monday there is nothing in Sen. Hillary Clinton's record that would give him any cause for concern about her in terms of racial politics.

Asked how Obama interpreted two recent remarks by the Clintons that prompted an angry reaction from some in the Black community, Obama sought to damp down the racial dynamics of the controversy.

Many African Americans were offended when Hillary Clinton told an interviewer in New Hampshire, "Martin Luther King's dream became a reality when Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964."

Some say she seemed to suggest that it took a white politician to fulfill a black man's dream.

"I don't think it was in any way a racial comment," Obama told ABC News. "That's something that has played out in the press. That's not my view."

46. It took him a week too long. Looks more poll driven than leadership.
The longer it takes the more suspicious it is. I was saying Obama should put a stop to it last week. Why did it take so long?

opened their mouth? I don't remember Obama being on MTP discussing this subject or on in other national stage discussing it in-depth. God I will say the Clintons train their robots well. Do just as the Clintons blame it on everyone else! It's gotten too damn old and I for one am really tired of it and really don't want a replay of the 90's--at least not that version.

31. You have been one of the strongest pushers of the
racist theme for what you clearly thought was a good campaign strategy for the Obama camp.

You have to live with it now.

Obama could have stopped this days ago but he didn't. Someone close to him thought it was working in their favor. Now they have figured out that it was not.

About that drink - forget about it. You have to live with the role you played. You made the mud - you clean it up.

Obama Precinct Captain's Mailer Urges Republicans To Switch Parties To Stop Hillary

By Greg Sargent - January 14, 2008, 5:10PM

An Obama precinct captain in Nevada has circulated a flyer that urges Republicans (and independents) to become Democrats just for a day in order to stop Hillary.

The flyer is likely to be controversial, because it's playing on Republican dislike of Hillary to get GOP voters to affect the outcome of the Democratic caucuses.

"Republicans, Independents, Everyone," the flyer reads. "You can make the difference if you think a Democrat will win in November and you don't want Hillary...You can come to the Democratic caucus and vote for Obama."

33. Don't insult us. Post the WHOLE thing, including the part where this was CORRECTED!
From the very same source you posted:

Obama spokesman Bill Burton confirmed that Buchanan is a precinct captain, and sent me this statement:

We'’ve learned that one individual who volunteers for the campaign was making the flyer and we’ve instructed him to stop creating and distributing it. But make no mistake, we want as many independents and Republicans to become Democrats and help to build a new governing majority in this country.
I just got off the phone with the precinct captain, Bob Buchanan. He said that he had stopped distributing this particular flyer and replaced it with what he called a more positive one.

Please don't intentionally mislead fellow DUers.

44. Okay, so the campaign only has *one* hand in the cookie jar.
It's been clear for some time that the Obama campaign is going after swing repubs, and that Hillary hate is one of his most valuable assets.

The constituency he's going after does not find accusations of Hillary racism a strong motivator to vote for him.

41. Hillary apologize? For what? Telling the truth about the history
of the country? And comparing what MLK went through to achieve his dream to the "o"'s pretentious claim to have the same dream? Comparing the experience of war hero and long term "FULL TIME" Senator JFK to "o"'s time in the hood snorting what he said he snorted in his book?

Hillary has nothing to apologize for. This argument has its source with "o" comparing himself to qualities in JFK and MLK. Obvious the comparison is like apples and "o"ranges. And wisely, "o" has decided to pull the plug on it. It's an argument even a great speaker cannot long support.

51. You see in this reply, obama again injects race into it....Until
obama answered, it was President Johnson, and now when obama response President Johnson becomes a "white politican". Oh this man is too slick by half and it goes back to a comment in made in manchester n.h. earlier last year. Obama said, “minority candidates have ‘a higher threshold in establishing themselves with voters.’” That is a laughable claim but a shrewd use of the race card to position Obama for future manipulation of the electoral process and now one can see from this how he is using it. For him to claim that the barriers are higher, that the bar is higher for him to succeed, is nonsense. It is crass racialism. Obama is a product of the very “24-hour…small-minded politics” that he decries.
