Bob Johnson apologizes to Barack Obama
a little late, but . . .

Four days after he made an unmistakable allusion to Obama's teenage drug use and even referred to him as Sidney Poitier, Clinton supporter Bob Johnson apologized to Obama for those remarks.

"I'm writing to apologize to you and your family personally for the un-called-for comments I made at a recent Clinton event," Johnson said in a statement. "In my zeal to support Senator Clinton, I made some very inappropriate remarks for which I am truly sorry. I hope that you will accept this apology. Good luck on the campaign trail."

2. He shouldn't have said what he said, but at least he gave an unconditional apology
Not one of those "i apologize to anyone who I might've offended" type conditional apologies.

3. But all he was doing was talking about Obama organizing 'in the neighborhood'
 Why would he apologize?

And why hasn't the Clinton campaign asked him to step aside - like she promised???

6. I don't think they can ask him to "step aside" since he's not a campaign official
But I bet we won't be seeing him anywhere near Sen. Clinton any time soon.

11. Was Bill Shaheen a 'campaign official' ?
I'm not being snarky - I really don't know and am too lazy to look it up.

7. He apologized because Clinton is losing potential voters, and that
is the only reason. The BS that campaign is pulling is hurting more than it is helping them.

10. You have no idea why he did it since you can't read his mind
It could also be that he's been getting slammed privately by his friends who have given him the whatfor for saying what he did and helped him see past his own arrogance to the problem that he has caused (a problem that goes beyond any political damage to Hillary Clinton).

Just saying . .

23. I agree - I think it's more likely being associated with her campaign
is becoming too costly for him. I wonder how many other supporters are going to feel they need to distance themselves from her campaign lest they be tagged with her tactics.

So it seems Hillary's statement in the debate claiming Johnson had already made such an acknowledgment was a lie, too.

at his word. and also said his comments were out of bound. remember, it wasn't just the "community" comment he made, it was also the likability/look who's coming to dinner.

so she didn't lie.

MR. RUSSERT: Were his comments out of bounds?

SEN. CLINTON: Yes, they were, and he has said that.

Unfortunately, Johnson made no such statement until today.

Didn't Bob Kerrey apologize for mentioning Obama's background in a Madrassa in a moment of zeal?

The whole thing is one of the biggest fairy tales I've ever seen.

33. Let's Pretend We're Not Republicans
And have a little reality break. As social liberals, we do not actually believe that someone's teenage drug use many, many years ago is actually something that would stop someone from being an excellent President.

In fact, Obama's frankness is really refreshing after years of "I didn't inhale" and "I didn't have sexual relations with that woman."

Suggesting that the former drug use is so terrible as to be unmentionable may help Clinton in the short term, but - as happens so often with the Clintons - it hurts liberalism generally in the longterm by conceding and legitimating the issue for conservatives.
