Harry Reid determined to bring FISA bill with retroactive immunity to the floor
next week. He is equally determined it will pass. According to Glenn Greenwald, there is really no 18 month waiting period before trying for a new bill.

I am so disappointed with Harry Reid.

Reid determined to give lawbreaking telecoms immunity.

He does not appear to care what we think. He is making Chris Dodd's hold on the bill totally irrelevant. Reid has honored GOP holds on bills, but he is ignoring a member of his own party.

Over the past several months, Democratic Senators Jay Rockefeller and Harry Reid have been the two most valuable instruments in the Bush administration's efforts to obtain vastly expanded warrantless eavesdropping powers and immunity for lawbreaking telecoms. As the Senate returns to Washington next week, Reid is apparently now more determined than ever before to ensure that the Bush administration's FISA demands are complied with in full.

Contrary to the completely erroneous claims by the Wall St. Journal Editorial Page that Senate Democrats intend to enact an 18-month extension of the Protect America Act without telecom immunity (false claims that produced some premature blogospheric declarations of victory last week), Reid has spent the last two weeks making abundantly clear that his intention is to bring to the Senate floor as early as next week the Bush-compliant Senate Intelligence Committee bill, and has further made clear that it's his expectation that that bill -- complete with warrantless eavesdropping powers and telecom immunity -- will pass. Because the Protect America Act is scheduled to expire in early February, it will be necessary to extend it by 30 to 60 days, but that is seen by the Senate Democratic leadership only as a tool to enable them to work out a deal with the House to ensure that a bill acceptable to the President is sent to the White House promptly.

From all appearances, Sen. Dodd is as committed as ever to doing what he can to stop telecom immunity (thus giving the lie to the jaded claims from Reid and others that he was doing this only to help his presidential bid) -- including full-scale filibusters and other forms of procedural obstructionism. But thanks to Reid's decision to bring to the floor the immunity-providing SIC bill (rather than the immunity-denying SJC bill), it will be exceedingly difficult for Dodd and his allies to strip immunity out of the bill by amendment (60 votes would be required to overcome a certain filibuster of any such amendment). Thus, Bush and Cheney -- with the subservient loyalty of their key allies, Rockefeller and Reid -- appear, at least as of right now, highly likely to prevail in their twin goals of warrantless eavesdropping and telecom immunity.

This is the type of thing I meant when I said there was too little time left to fix the party.

By the time they keep passing things like this, the administration will have such a hold on our party that there will be no way to break it.

HOW do we make that happen? Is there anything WE can do?

HOW did they get those positions to begin with?

Is there a time limit to how long they can serve?

There must be some way to remove people from these positions if the voters are unhappy. I hope.

21. But that's nothing new. He's BEEN that way for years
and so have the rest of them. We see new evidence every day that the elections are fixed. We see television networks deciding who the candidates will be. and even here on DU, people think things are just fine and spend all their time arguing about candidates as if a fixed election is going to matter or make some kind of difference. If people here don't even see what's going on, how can we expect the rest of the country to get it?

If this is true and all there is to it then as many who vote for it as possible must get primary opponents. I don't care whether they come from red or blue states because our basic rights are more important than anything. I'll write to my Senators. I'm already planning to give Dodd a little money on payday. I hope others do to.

I was for Dodd for president. If Dodd was backed for president when he started fighting over FISA things could have been turned around.

25. Update: Politico warns Dems that Rove is watching them.
And the author of the post had the nerve to use the phrase..."post 9/11 world". I hate those words.

http://www.politico.com/blogs/thecrypt/0108/Roves_eye_will_be_on_FISA_vote.html

"Take note, Democratic presidential operatives: Karl Rove will be very carefully watching the Senate floor vote on the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Addressing the Republican National Committee’s winter meeting Wednesday, Rove urged the party faithful to watch closely how the Democratic presidential front-runners, New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, vote on the issue.

“Do they or do they not want our intelligence agencies to be listening in on conversations between terrorists in the Middle East who may be plotting to hurt America?” Rove asked.

A former top adviser to President Bush, Rove is still seen as perhaps the pre-eminent Republican electoral strategist, with Beltway insiders hanging on his every word. And while “The Architect,” as Bush calls him, used most of his speech to attack Clinton’s and Obama’s record on health care, taxes and the war in Iraq, Rove particularly homed in on FISA.

The issue cuts to the core of national security in a post-Sept. 11 world, Rove said, and he is betting that voters will favor the GOP’s argument over concerns about trampling civil liberties raised by Democrats."

40. Here's a thought...the Telecoms are Tanking! Sprint/Nextel/AT&T
Edited on Fri Jan-18-08 05:18 PM by KoKo01
in the Stock Market...Fears about the economy could be the reason that Reid & Senate will give them Immunity. Sprint is laying off 4000 jobs and closing stores...ATT not doing well. Consumer tapped out...Bush Economy is in Implosion. If telecoms are held accountable their stocks will tank further with Wall St. worry about their stocks tanking further on liability risk. That means they will lay off more workers and close more outlets.

With Senate it's a matter of the Economy and Jobs (for our Dems and those vulnerable Repugs) over holding the telecoms responsible.

BTW: I can't stand Harry Reid and I'm disliking Pelosi more and more...but Dodd and Feingold won't be able to hold it against the "needs of the US Economy" that BushCo and Repug Congress have wrecked. Not that many of our Dems didn't vote for SEC DeRegulation and demise of Glass-Steagall that might have prevented this latest Housing Bubble and Mortgage Meltdown.

41. Stop and think about this for a minute.
If the Telcoms are in that much financial trouble, that means they are in the best possible position for our side to define the terms of negotiation. Congress could dictate to them, have them name names, throw the crooked CEOs under the bus, and get new leadership.

Otherwise, Bush's tanked economy makes a nifty getaway car, don't you think? Bankrupting the country and hamstringing it so bad that nobody will come after them. What a master mind plan!

42. Oh Yeah...I understand exactly what you say...but when have
Pelosi or Reid ever pulled those strings to get a compromise that causes "heads to roll."

If I think about it and try to be kind to Pelosi/Reid...it's possible that Gonzo leaving and some other "resignations" might have been due to "back room dealing" where they've told Bush/Cheney their "nuts are in the fire," and they are fighting like hell to beat back their Dem Grassroots...so they better do some "cooperating." But, every time I think our Dems are listening to us...or even listening to what should be their Constitutional Souls...I'm always disappointed.

But...it's worth an action of more phone calling and raising a rumpus...once again..sigh...to maybe put that bug in Reid's ear that those Telecoms might get immunity...but at a PRICE of giving "info" about what the circumstances were that they spied on us. Under whose orders...what was the chain of command...what did they do with the info...and who will be held accountable. I think it's the least they could do for that AT&T Whistleblower who testified about the "secret room" where AT&T monitors us...who probably has been threatened along with his friends and every relative he has.

What a fix we are in...huh. Who woulda thought it could get this bad...being compromised over Bush to save the economy...if that's what it is and not just the usual "We Protect our own in the Beltway." :puke:

43. I have a problem with complete immunity for this reason:
You know there are goon Republicans working inside those Telcoms that gladly found a reason to break with privacy laws in the US to gather information on political or even business opponents. THOSE people should be shown the door. Those are the people that need to be held accountable.

It appears they have been setting up their power structure in our government for many years. I see very few Representatives who are truly interested in representing the American people (besides the elite and their giant corporate empires). This Bill is for them one more important nail in the coffin wherein lies our precious Constitution. They have worked hard at pulling the wool over our eyes with all of this manufactured nationalism and fear-mongering. Americans have for the most part been blinded by the propaganda. Who owns the media? Who owns our Representatives? I AM ANGRY!!

Harry Reid and friends, you don't care about me and my freedoms. That is becoming glaringly evident!

Senators Clinton and Obama, will I be seeing you doing the job for us to which you were elected by us American citizens?. The job that you swore to do, defend our Constitutional rights?

Time is ticking, when will the Senators speak out on this outrage? When will they represent us? Will they defend us?

I AM F**KING ANGRY!!!!

It is rather scary how the capitulation has been done. They sound like they will fight...probably to pacify the base..and they give Bush his agenda.

It is almost too much to take in. Yet we are supposed to keep on believing and supporting.
