Reagan attacked those now at DU. A reminder why we are enraged
Reagan divided America by repealing those excesses of the the 60's,

Reagan followed in a tradition from the beginning of this country, to paint his political opponents as not being real patriots, real Americans. In his case, his opponents were the progressive Democrats now found at DU. Remember how wonderful it felt when we caused all those problems from the 60's on, when Reagan united the silent majority against us, when we were "they", and once again race, gender, fear, jingoism, prejudice, selfishness, bigotry, and hate could regain their rightful prominence in America:

"They" want to destroy America, those long-haired dirty hippies, shiftless n***ers, uppity women, godless commie elites -- they hate America, spit on our soldiers and betray POWs to our enemies, burn the flag, burn their bras, and they can burn in Hell -- All they ever do is tell us what to do: buckle up, slow down, exercise, wear a sweater, freeze your ass.

Those militant feminists demand that you pay some woman as much as man who has a family to support when we know she will just get pregnant and have to quit her job -- some of them want to make us re-hire them, let them even nurse their babies, exposing themselves in the office - disgusting -- what next? Pay their hospital bills?

We must unite to protect America from those who say our best years are behind us, those nay-sayers who only want something for nothing, those spoiled whiners, those flower children who refuse to grow up, who think they're above working like the rest off us -- who only want to smoke pot, make love, make babies, and make you pay for it. These pinko deadbeats want to take your rights, your guns, and your money and give it to welfare queens and draq queens.

The time has now come to turn our backs on those who only complain, to dismiss those who who would try to cripple vital infrastructure with illegal strikes, who see America as defeated - its day over and it now entering its twilight, and to make sure that those who riot in our streets or clog our courts suing for special rights and privileges, are not allowed to destroy our way of life.

So it is time to lower our voices for a new day is dawning in America.

A new day, a new way, for a new America. Restoring our traditional values of faith and family, of respect for our institutions, of obeying the law, of personal responsibility and not a handout, of respect in the world backed by superior military strength, and finally, tax cuts for all.

That's how I remember Reagan and his supporters. Now there I go, those were not his words. He communicated much better, with a twinkle, a flourish, a joke, to inspire and to restore hope to his many followers.

Unfortunately, hope was being snatched from millions of others.

3. Exactly - Reagan was a FEARMONGERER!
To hear Obama say that he was about "optimism" and "clarity" should raise a big RED FLAG for Democrats. As Olbermann pointed out tonight ~ Reagan "rolled up the liberal advances" that had been made.

7. Reaganism was like drunkenness. It was fun but made our problems worse.
Take energy. Our country had worked hard in the 70s to become more energy efficient (sweaters indeed.). Reagan undid everything. Now we are literally paying for it with money. We're also paying for it in blood as we continue our mid east wars. Does anyone see a change coming soon? No! We haven't even started down the path of fixing our energy problems. In ten years, maybe things will START to improve. That is only ONE of our problems.

We're in a war, we're in debt, we're being screwed by the oil companies, and it's going to get worse. Thank you GOP, George Worthless Bush, Ralph Nader, and most of all, false "christians." 911-911. Now IT's really 911 for all Americans. The real emergency is coming. The real terror begins.

8. Stop being "enraged" and start using your brains...
Edited on Thu Jan-17-08 10:58 PM by regnaD kciN
We need a "Reagan of our own" -- someone who can move the country in a progressive direction with the same force as Ronnie moved it in a reactionary direction. "Centrist" triangulation won't do the job; it can only, at best, stop the bleeding for awhile without healing the underlying wound.

It's not a matter of admiring Reagan's policies -- it's a matter of admiring his ability to lead in a way that would convince people to follow the course he laid out. We in the Democratic Party haven't had such a leader since FDR (and maybe JFK, although he died before we could really see the results of his leadership).

And, if Democrats can't see that clearly due to being "enraged" that anyone would dare say anything positive about any aspect of Reagan's effectiveness...then we really deserve the title of "morans."

9. You're assuming he'd move the country in a "progressive" direction...
That's exactly what is in question when he disses boomers, talks about the "excesses" of the 60s and 70s and invokes the name of Reagan.

Obama is not the one. Spontaneously thousands of Baby Boomers have arrived at the same conclusion. Obama is clueless and worse: he used the loaded language of the RW to frame his campaign, to attack progressive Democrats, and to denigrate the core values and beliefs of the Democratic Party.

For me, the choice is Edwards. John and Elizabeth understand. Elizabeth particularly.

16. This is a moderate example of what many of us are seeing today:
You are reasonable in your response, but then you have to go to the "use your brains" or "morans" thing.

The anger and concern is based upon DECADES of experience and political education. There are more informed, long-time Dems upset about this because they see the political calculation to appeal to the right in such a hot button fashion at the expense of a Democrat, during the PRIMARIES, is...well, I no longer have the word for it, but it's very disturbing.

And there are a lot of we Edwards supporters for whom Obama has been our second choice. So this isn't a Hillary-initiated thing at all.

The arrogance and rudeness has amazed me today. You guys need to learn to defend your candidate without assuming those who don't agree are...um, how did one Obama supporter say it, "blind-sided, glassy-eyed, ill-informed" lemmings.

12. One minor point...
Nixon started all of this by using the phrase the Silent majority, coined by Kevin Phillips who has been writing all sorts of apologetic books to atone for his part in the rise of the radical right, as a bludgeon against those speaking out against the entrenched old boy network. He in essence gave cover to the racists, homophobes, knuckle dragging men and big business who were the status quo at the time...
