Clinton caps day in Southland at UCSB
SANTA BARBARA — With the California primary 2 1/2 weeks away, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton made her biggest Southern California campaign swing so far on Thursday, skipping Ventura County but capping the day with an appearance at UC Santa Barbara.

Clinton spoke to about 1,000 people in a gym at UCSB's Recreation Center, and at least 1,000 more were turned away at the door. The crowd was almost entirely university students, with a small selection of prominent Santa Barbara Democrats in the first few rows.

Clinton gave a speech of about 35 minutes and then took questions from the crowd. She avoided even subtle jabs at her primary opponents, Sen. Barack Obama, D.-Ill., and former South Carolina Sen. John Edwards, instead laying into President Bush, who, she said, has "governed by fear and infected America with fatalism."

"We will not tolerate one more year of the kind of incompetent, insensitive, indifferent leadership we've had for the last seven years," she said.

4. Not to bash Clinton but isn't there a contradiction here?
Providing a way for illegals to become citizens and clamping down on employers who hire illegals.

So you raid a poultry factory. You find illegals working there. You tell them, there is a path to citizenship for you but you can't work here unless you are here legally. So when do they become legal? Do they remain unemployed until then? Do we deport them and bring them back later?

What should they do in the mean time?

8. What do people do while they wait around to be legal? Where do they get their basic necessities?

No you can't do both. There never is an intention to stop people from having lower paid workers.

The only reasonable thing to do is say, from day one the immigrants are legal and come under the protections of the labor laws. Then they become citizens over time.

That will immediately increase the legal labor poor, forcing down wages for unskilled labor.

We need an increase in unskilled jobs paying a living wage. I never heard that from anyone.

It seems to me none of this is well thought out. People just say what sounds nice.

9. Sorry I missed that, but I was out of town for the day. Now I want Obama to come back...
...because I missed him when he came to SBCC last summer (funeral, also out of town).
