DU is so funny sometimes. NV caucus will have about 30-50K attendees tomorrow, noone knows who
will be there, we don't know who will attend or why they will decide to go...Or how they will vote. I just saw a poll saying Edwards will get 12%? WTF? I am not supporting Edwards, but I am not buying it either.

Yet here on DU, we have had 100,000 fights over Nevada. I am sure there has been over one million posts about NV regarding stuff like law suits, DK and teachers union, ads, apologies demanded, name calling, hispanics, Bill losing his temper, Michelle, the debate there...And on and on and on.

If I had to guess, only one or two people from DU will attend tomorrow's caucus in NV. And, I guarantee you no minds were changed.

Just a bunch of crazy bullshit on the Internets!

15. I think Obama wins if it's 30. Maybe not at 50.
Because the culinary union should be able to turn out around 10K on their own.

11. who refuted that? The union bosses. Riggghhhttt. I believe them
she misunderstood when they told her she could not caucus if she did not caucus for Obama. Riighht. That was all a big misunderstanding.

3. Polls don't mean a thing, as witnessed by NH. I'm waiting until
tomorrow. And how does one actually poll a caucus? Also, this is the first time Nevada has been in this situation, so I don't think anyone knows much of anything. We need to watch it play out.

8. DU doesn't really care about voter disenfranchisement
That's what the Nevada caucus has taught me.

Edited on Fri Jan-18-08 08:16 PM by stillcool47
they surely don't care about this

Tell Congress: Pass Emergency Bill for Secure Elections in 2008
Now is your best chance to to help make the 2008 Presidential election verifiable. Please ask your members of Congress to co-sponsor the "Emergency Assistance for Secure Elections Act of 2008”, Representative Rush Holt's bill to provide emergency funding for paper ballots voting systems and random hand counted audits of the November elections.

17. I posted in the election forum
to try to get the election people on board to get hand audits in every state before November. This bill won't mean anything unless there is organization to get the legislation passed. Well no we can't do that because it's got to be hand counted ballots or nothing.

18. If states have to voluntarily opt
into these protective measures, and people don't care about it, why should they bother?
Here's my LTTE:

There have been many reports of problems with different voting systems through out the country. I was under the impression that because we use paper ballots in Massachusetts, our system of voting was the most secure. However, after reading a few of the many studies which document vulnerabilities to different systems, I have learned that my assumption was false. One such study was made by the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law. The four chapter report was published in 2006
http://brennan.3cdn.net/a56eba8edf74e9e12e_r2m6b86s2.pdf

The good news is that some very simple procedures can be implemented that would minimize the risks with our particular voting system, the Diebold AccuVote OS-5 Optical Scanner, As stated in the report: "Our analysis shows that systems with voter-verified paper records provide little, if any, security benefit over systems without such records, unless there are regular audits of and/or recounts of paper ballots". Report after report recommends the hand-counting of a percentage of ballots to provide and insure accuracy in the tabulation of our votes. Many states have already adopted such measures, but we in Massachusetts remain susceptible to error-laden tabulations. Rush Holt has introduced a bill today, to provide emergency funding for paper ballots voting systems AND random audit hand counted audits of the November elections. I urge my representatives in Congress to cosponsor the Emergency Assistance for Secure elections Act of 2008.. I also urge all Massachusetts State Representatives to heed the warnings stated in these reports and implement the procedures with or without the response by Congress. After all the years that have passed since the revelation of the myriad of problems with our voting systems, I do not believe that it is wise to wait for action by Congress to adopt such simple preventive measures.

19. That is very good
Are you in touch with Mass people, or voting people, to get going on this?

Oregon implemented hand audit legislation last year, all our ballots are paper because we do mail-in. I like our system so much, there is much less chance for fraud. All the ballots go to one county location and are counted there, so there aren't a bunch of precincts where fraud can take place either. It isn't perfect, we still need the software code in escrow or open source, but it's a lot better than what most states have.
