"When I read the Bible, I do so with the belief that it is not a static text but the Living Word....
and that I must be continually open to new revelations - whether they come from a lesbian friend or a doctor opposed to abortion."

Great....!

Just remember...we're electing a president, not a national priest/pastor/rabbi/whatever...and it is a secular position, sworn to uphold a secular set of laws also know as the Constitution.

Other than that, hey, good attitude...

4. I'll be REALLY impressed when a candidate comes right out and says ...
Edited on Fri Jan-18-08 10:45 PM by sjdnb
It's none of your business what I believe or don't believe; what I think of the Bible, Koran, Torah, Book of the Dead, or any other religious text - RELIGION has NO place in GOVERNMENT. The Constitution SAYS so where it states - "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

Translation: Will NEITHER promote nor prohibit - Religion is irrelevant in government.

And, further, the only reference to the holding of religious beliefs, the Constitution addresses, voids those beliefs or lack of beliefs from having any impact on a candidate's eligibility/suitability to hold office.

Fortunately for us, our Constitution was written by founding fathers who were a lot more thoughtful, insightful, intelligent, and visionary than the politicians of today -- it just might be our saving grace.

5. hmmp
these dusty old stories are the "Living Word" ?!?

I have difficulty with ANYONE who believes in the supernatural, particularly if they brag about it.

In Obama's case, he seems intelligent enough; I am skeptical that he talked that way before he was a candidate accused of being a Muslim.

Can you say PANDER?

41. Sadly, yes, he disagrees with General Synod on this.
I'm deeply disappointed in him over this, and don't understand it. No doubt, it is a position born of political expediency. Which is why it's disappointing. It si especially upsetting to those of us who are glbt members of the UCC.

Thanks for acknowledging our great position. I wish all UCCs would!

17. All the arguments become academic...
as long as we insist that our candidates remember that the Presidency is a secular office, operating within a framework of secular law...and that the Constitution is a secular document, and intended to be so.

The potential makeup of the SCOTUS is of primary importance in this election cycle, imho.

38. As I understand it, it can mean a lot of things...
...but what I understand, in a general way, is that while cultural and historical situations may change the principles behind the teachings of scripture do not...although they may conform to new cultural/historical situations.

40. Yeah...ALL the candidates need a sharp reminder...
that the office of the president is a secular office, with a sworn oath to uphold a secular set of laws as expresses in the Constitution...a secular document.

Church/State seperation...it is the major bulwark against tyranny shrouded in religion...
