<snip>
About 1,000 people squeezed into the Elko Indian Colony gymnasium to see Clinton. For many, it was their first look at Clinton in person, as she made her first visit to the city.

About 1,700 people turned out for Obama’s speech. Several hundred people left Clinton’s speech early, dozens of cars formed a caravan to drive over to the Elko High School gymnasium to hear Obama.

22. LV SUN: When campaigns collide (this is sort of funny)
January 18, 2008 · 3:18 PM

ELKO — This was the collision of presidential campaigns in this high desert city, where all three Democratic candidates have dropped in. John Edwards came and left last night.

Today, after lunch, Hillary Clinton was on a roll at a Soshone Indian school gymnasium, teasing Barack Obama for throwing valentines at Ronald Reagan and admonishing all of the labor unions in Southern Nevada to encourage everyone to participate fair-and-square. After her remarks to more than 600 people — some of them big supporters, others undecided and trying to make up their minds — she offered to take questions.

With that, people started pouring out of the gymnasium.

“I understand if you have to go,” she said. “A lot of people, you have to go and pick up your kids. But I’m going to stay and answer questions.”

Kids weren’t the issue. Obama was due in 20 minutes at the Elko High School gymnasium 10 minutes away, and so they had to hustle.

At the Obama event, by my count there were about twice as many people.

But a lot of them were still wearing Clinton campaign stickers on their shirts

11. I had to turn it off.
Did you see the Obama rally that proceeded it? The contrast would have been just too much.

18. Yes, I watched.
Inspiring, per usual. It's easy to lose sight of just how good he is on the stump...until you see others.

19. this was at the Te-Moak Tribe of the Western Shoshone Indians of Nevada
they are a federally recognized tribe with four band councils and four Indian colonies which exist by executive order, not reservations.

23. the Western Shoshone were forced to live on the border of NV and ID
by the calvary in the mid-1800s. They were forced to mix with Paiutes, their enemies. Many years later, many left the Owyhee Indian Reservation and wandered back to their region around Elko County and other rural counties in Nevada and live on the land. In the case of Elko, a rancher got paid big federal dollars to sell his ranch on the north part of the city to the Dept of Interior to give the Te-Moak Tribe of the WS a home where they wanted to live. Thus, by executive order the Elko Indian Colony was established. Similar things happened to dedicate the Wells Indian Colony, the Battle Mountain Indian Colony and the South Fork "reservation" which is the only "reservation" land they have.

I worked for them for a few years.
