Giuliani's spin on Mel's Diner... Blind to Our Economy!
Giuliani's spin on Mel's Diner

Regarding Mel's Diner closing:

I was covering for the Swiss and German media the bus-tour stop of Rudy Giuliani at Sarasota's Mel's Diner on Monday evening. He gave me an interview for those newspapers.

I asked him a question about the American economy. Giuliani responded that the American economy is in great shape, that Republican President George Bush has done a great job.

Then Friday, I read that the Mel's Diner closed on Tuesday and hasn't paid its employees.

Is it not shameful for a potential president of the United States to say that the U.S. economy is in great shape when employees are so often laid off? In Europe, we know that America is in a recession. Evidently candidate Giuliani did not know on Monday the real-life situation at Mel's Diner, or that many average American citizens have long been struggling with similar fates -- the surprise of losing their job at a moment's notice.

For the Swiss and German readers, he says the American economy is in great shape.

2. Do you find the German and Swiss to be interested in the American political process?
I mean, with the primary process?

The reason I ask is that I will be in Bologna in May and plan to ask some students there what their ideas are about the long primary process in this country to arrive at our candidates. Have you had any experience in Italy with this subject? I don't know what to expect actually...
