***This is an attempt to create a thread where we do not all flame each other based on our support for our particular candidate. There are plenty of other places to "yell" at each other, please try to keep this thread civil.***
It may be a terrible idea, many of my ideas are, but I wanted to float it out there and see what other Dems think of it. Please note, a government web site would need to be set up to allow people to take advantage of this option. If people did not go to the site to sign up then the default program would still apply to them. (maybe toll free number too)
Instead of simply sending taxpayers a check for X amount of dollars, give them a choice to either get that check OR have X+ $100.00/$200.00 paid directly into their mortgage.
For example, instead of getting a check for 800 bucks, the government pays your mortgage company 900 bucks. Or instead of a check for 1600, they send 1800 to your mortgage company. These numbers could easily change of course.
You would still need to be under the 85k or 110k caps, as well as be eligible under all the other restrictions placed on the "rebate".
Why do I think this is a good idea?
First and foremost because of the mortgage crisis. This would give people a chance to catch up if they are behind on a payment (or more than one). It can also be "spun/seen" as helping the mortgage companies, since the Republicans will insist on something that helps corporations. As well as the insurance companies. Some of it will even go back into some (local) government entities, assuming taxes are included in the mortgage payment.
Another reason I like this idea. I think this can be done more quickly than sending checks. An electronic transfer could be done as soon as you finish the form on the web site, or almost as soon.
It also insures that the money is spent on something reasonable. It does not insure that people won't take the money they would have sent to pay their mortgage and buy items they don't need. I think it is a good way to help people and directly address the mortgage problem at the same time.
I could go on and on but this post is longer than I planned already.
Thank you for taking the time to read my (crazy?) idea and thank you for any input you would care to post.
P.S. 'gratz to the Clinton supporters, see ya in S.C.
