Why did the Firestone Mechanic call me a "young man" today?
Edited on Mon Jan-21-08 05:35 PM by itsrobert
Was he saying I was inexperience to do my own brake job? I know I look good for my age, but I'm 44 years old. ;)

1. Depends, was he older than you?
I find people in their 60s and 70s still call me young.

I'm 45.

2. I'm 41 and I'm regularly assumed to be at least 10 years younger...
I can't say if he was implying anything and, frankly, it's a bad idea for him to do so.

3. My grandmother once refered our neighbors as "that nice young couple accross the street"
Edited on Mon Jan-21-08 05:23 PM by LeftyMom
That nice young couple was about 70, but she was pushing 90, so she had kids almost their age. I guess youth is just a matter of perspective.

4. Take it as a compliment.
You'll hear it less and less as you get older. I still get a kick when an old timer calls me that, and I'm a bit older than you.

(Unless, of course, you're a woman, and then I could see why you might be upset ;-) )

5. Were you getting the brakes done on your tricycle?
That could account for what his comment.

6. I'm 48 and I was getting the same thing from people...
...turned out it was the way I was wearing my pants:

When they passed the new "sagging drawers" law I immediately brought myself into compliance and now I don't get that "young man" stuff anymore.

11. I'm approaching mid-50's and I'm regularly called "young man"
Edited on Mon Jan-21-08 05:40 PM by Gman
by folks in their 80's. Fact is, those 80-somethings are the age my parents would have been. I don't mind at all. In fact, it gives me a good feeling like there really are some things that don't change!

12. Borrowing a bit from Stephan Kings stuff...
In at least one of his books about downeast...he remarks frequently that men are referred to as 'boy' until they reach the ripe age of about 70 and then they are referred to as 'young man.' I suspect that is just Maine lore...but it makes a certain amount of sense.

Offhand it is just an affectionate term in it's own way.

Sometimes I tend to call those 60 or so as...(gasp) KIDS.

15. I generally call everyone younger than 30 "kids"
and, sometimes "children" because they are the age of or younger than my kids.

14. Talked to a lawyer on the phone
I asked how long he had been doing family law and he said, since before you were born. When we met, we found out we went to college together in the 60's.

17. Sounds like old fashioned courtesy to me.
I interviewed a 101 year old man some years ago. At the outset of the interview, he gestured to my chair for me be seated and said, "Have a seat young man and tell me what I can do for you." (I as 48 yrs old then.)

His good manners were amazing.
