What Effect Will It Have That Edwards Is Not Even Trying For New England?
With the other two New Englanders, former Gov. Howard Dean of Vermont and Senator Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut, out of the race, Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts seems poised to win if not all, certainly nearly all of the 178 delegates at stake on Tuesday in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont and Connecticut.

Senator John Edwards of North Carolina has not campaigned in the region, concentrating his Super Tuesday efforts on California, New York, Ohio, Georgia and Minnesota.

"New England is the invisible area now," said Darrell West, a political scientist at Brown University in Providence, R.I. "It is going to be Kerry territory, and he doesn't have to make any effort. Edwards has just conceded it."

What does this say about Edwards? Shouldn't he be at least be a little bit competitive?

Am I just really tired or is this one of the funniest pictures of the race?

1. Are they just about to
consummate their new gay marriage, or what??? If so, Edwards looks a little worried about it! That photo is hilarious! :D

...as far as Edwards and New England. It is pretty clear that his campaign is against the wall now, so he's concentrating his efforts where he has the best chance to win. Kerry's also focusing on where Edwards has the best chance.

It's not about a national campaign for either of them now, it's about trying to knock Edwards out.

7. On a more serious note
I don't appreciate the fact the Edwards is practically ignoring a huge democrat stonghold. I'm in that area and he just doesn't have the base here. We'd all vote for him in the general election, but if he can't even bother with us during the primaries we won't like it.

I've seen Kerry speak 3 times in Boston. Edwards 0. I saw him in Denver in 2002. That's a long time ago. I don't think Edwards has even graced the beautiful state of Massachusetts since his run (besides Hardball appearances).

8. It will have the effect of letting Kerry win every single delegate
Nice strategy there, Senator Edwards.

9. Why bother? It's way too uphill as an underdog in the primaries
and he'll own it in the general election.

This is the great big whopper obvious truth that so many seem so oblivious of: Edwards will get all of the traditional Democratic voters if nominated; he doesn't even need to work for them. The huge difference is that he can make penetrations in the South, rural areas and among moderates and conservatives everywhere. Edwards will get all the voters that Kerry would have gotten (perhaps minus a few veterans) plus many more, and competitiveness in the whole country, forcing the enemy to deploy and spend everywhere.

He fought very hard in New Hampshire, but Dean and Kerry were very well known there, and Clark pumped tons of time and money into it. Clark also entered the race as either front-runner or at the very least tied for first. His was a triumphal entry at the top; Edwards couldn't fight that. As it was, Clark only took third in New Hampshire by 839 votes, or less than four tenths of a percent.

His battles were for the South, and because of Clark's tenacity, he was unable to fight for Michigan and some other places.

Perhaps he made tactical mistakes, but there was sense to the strategy.
