NY Times article from June 2007
An Obama Patron and Friend Until an Indictment
By CHRISTOPHER DREW and MIKE McINTIRE
Published: June 14, 2007

snip>
Mr. Obama has portrayed Mr. Rezko as a one-time fund-raiser whom he had occasionally seen socially. But interviews with more than a dozen political and business associates suggest that the two men were closer than the senator has indicated.

Mr. Obama turned to Mr. Rezko for help at several important junctures. Records show that when Mr. Obama needed cash in the waning days of his losing 2000 Congressional campaign, Mr. Rezko rounded up thousands of dollars from business contacts. In 2003, Mr. Rezko helped Mr. Obama expand his fund-raising for the Senate primary by being host of a dinner at his Mediterranean-style home for 150 people, including some whose names have since come up in the influence scandal.

And when Mr. Obama and his wife, Michelle, bought a house in 2005, Mr. Rezko stepped in again. Even though his finances were deteriorating, Mr. Rezko arranged for his wife to buy an adjacent lot, and she later sold the Obamas a 10-foot-wide strip of land that expanded their yard.

The land sale occurred after it had been reported that Mr. Rezko was under federal investigation. That awkward fact prompted Mr. Obama, who has cast himself as largely free from the normal influences of politics, to express regret over what he called his own bad judgment.snip<

This needs to be vetted long before he gets the nomination of the Dem party. We don't need the R's bringing this to the table when it will be to late for our party. This crap is pretty damning, can anyone spell RICO?

36. None of this rises to the level of his acting as accomplice to
. . . any of Rezko's illegal wrongdoing. Essentially Hillary was trying to use guilt by association, which is a fallacious charge always. But Hillary was indeed on the Walmart board and it would be hard to see how she would not share culpability for some of Walmart's predatory behavior.

24. I admit that I'm not aware of the specific facts of this Rezko situation
I'll try to find more information on the Internet about it. But if the only accusation is that he worked on the case of a bad person, did 5 hours of billing on it and was a mere associate in his firm (i.e. not a partner) I really don't see much there. As a lawyer myself and having been an associate in a firm, I know that 5 hours is barely a half a day of work and it doesn't sound like very heavy involvement in the matter. Lawyers often bill 10 to 12 hours a day. And an associate rarely has any say in the cases given to him or her. Besides, a lawyer handles the cases of every type of lowlife there is. Everyone deserves to be legally represented, even murderers. The fact that a lawyer works on a case on behalf of a client with a less than exemplary background means nothing. Lawyers do it all the time.

50. As is true for MANY MANY HRC ethics problems
Nothing in the story is more questionable that HRC making $100,000 starting with $1,000 in commodities trading, guided by a Tyson chicken lawyer, when Arkansas was being asked to control the waste from Tyson flowing into the rivers. No one can prove it wasn't good luck or that there was a connection there, but it is at least as easy to see a possible connection as it is in Obama's case. (If we want cleaner - the party should have supported Gore and Kerry more.)

41. Obama is named in an indictment of Rezko but not as someone guilty of a crime.
The gain he made via Rezko's money on the house land amounted to 1 years appreciation on a 100k real estate investment (he paid pro-rata what Rezko paid a year earlier) - not a big deal - but why keep the relationship going after 04 when it became obvious - if it wasn't before - that Rezko was going down? Indeed earlier the Rezko minority employer con revealed the Lebanese money behind Rezko - and Obama needed that post 9/11. It is only a judgment question, in my opinion - but it is a question.

We're talking about millions of dollars.

The Rezko case involves a couple real estate issues that even Patrick Fitzgerald, who is prosecuting the Rezko case, says that Obama did nothing wrong.

But hey, if you want Obama to bring up Hsu and his problems and direct alliance with both Clintons, we could take that train and drive it through the Clinton legacy like butter.
