Clinton plan: Let Bill lash out

By: Ben Smith
Jan 21, 2008 07:06 PM EST

So maybe Bill Clinton isn't quite so far off-message as we had assumed.

After two weeks of reports on the former president's temper, the former first lady's supposed inability to keep him on script, and the ostensibly dire impact on his legacy, Hillary Rodham Clinton has won two straight primaries.

If there are Democratic voters who share the assessment that he's a "liability" to the campaign — a term floated by outlets from The New York Times to the London Telegraph — this reporter and many others seem not to have found many of them. And though Clinton's original, improvised attacks on Sen. Barack Obama discomfited some inside his wife's campaign, they also seemed to hit their mark.

The campaign has settled on a new strategy: Turn Bill loose.

6. The meme that the Hillary Clinton campaign is turning Bill loose is already outdated.
Edited on Tue Jan-22-08 09:08 AM by Tom Rinaldo
Last night the Clinton campaign turned Hillary loose instead. Bill had NOT been playing his charming likability card for Hilary. He hasn't acted like her Oprah. It's exactly the opposite. Bill has been playing the political heavy and driving down his likability while doing so. Which is OK, because with polls showing that Bill is liked by almost 90% of Democrats, Bill Clinton can afford to squander a few hugs. And Obama responded.

I expect Bill to return to a less angry mode now. The campaign script has been changed. Obama was made to go off his preferred message to deal with Bill Clinton, but last night he had to deal with Hillary Clinton instead, and that is what I expect the final campaign phase to foucus on. Hillary showed that she is not going to hide in the shadows letting her husband get his hands dirty with politics instead of her. That was emerging as the new attack line agaisnt Hillary Clinton; she isn't tough enough to fight her own campaign, she needs Bill to do it for her. Last night she blew that out of the water, Barack Obama was (carefully) gunning for Bill and she used that as an opening.

Hillary Clinton is not going to hide her husband at some Bus station in suburban New Jersy. He remains popular and he will be on the campaign trail for her. But he won't be doing much more heavy lifting. That phase is over. That's my prediction anyway.

7. The Republicans will nail the Clintons with the trust issue
in the general election. Oh the irony in the Democrats losing on the trust issue after 8 years of Bush.
