Why was Hillary's name on the Michigan ballot?
Can someone explain why Hillary's name--and the other Dem candidates names were not--
on the Michigan Dem primary ballot?

If the Democratic party agreed that the delegates would not count---why was Hillary's
name still on the ballot?

20. What rule would that be exactly?
There was no rule against keeping your name on the ballot.

5. Because she plans to try and force the seating of delegates based on this flawed Primary
She is desperate for Delegates.

This is why she is trying to bandy MI about as a victory.

This is why she is attempting to get out of the Early-State pledge and go campaign in Florida.

They believe that they will need these delegates in the end.

9. His name remained on the ballot.
The deadline from withdrawing from the ballot was in Sept. 2007.

It does not matter if they were contenders.

10. Then there is another question....
Knowing that the Clinton machine often plays dirty---why did Obama and Edwards
leave themselves vulnerable like that--and take their names off???

Maybe the appropriate question isn't, "Why is Clinton on the ballot?". Maybe
the better question is, "Why did Edwards and Obama take their names off, opening
the door to dirty tricks and leaving themselves vulnerable?".

I read a while ago, that the state of Florida was fighting the Democratic assertion
that their delegates wouldn't count. What if a court in Florida or Michigan
determines that the DNC does not have the authority to declare that a state's
delegates don't count?

I think that situation is entirely possible and that the delegates of Florida
and Michigan will end up counting.

Which is why I'm wondering...why her name is on the ballot--but Obama's
and Edward's names are not?

18. Because Obama & Edwards got frightened by Richardson & Biden;s political move
So they jumped in last minute.

At the time (in polling) Edwards had fallen behind Clinton in Iowa and was getting beat by Richardson in NH. Obama was lagging in 3rd in Iowa and getting killed by Clinton in NH.

They feared an incursion by the Biden or Richardson campaign into their turf in Iowa & NH using their name removal as some sort of rallying cry.

As you can see Clinton's name remaining on the ballot has been a non issue with the exception of the DU primary wars.

Come the general election if Hillary is the nominee, the GOP will not be able to go into MI and say the candidate rejected you.

14. It was a smart move
If she wins the nomination, with or without the delegates, she can tell Michigan that she showed respect for the voters of Michigan.

That could prove important if Romney get the Repub nomination. It's his home state, and one we count on to stay blue.

It's not like she campaigned there, unlike Kucinich. And unlike Obama is doing in FL now by running ads there.

16. Kucinich tried to take his name off, but bungled the paperwork.
He submitted it an hour before the deadline (despite having three weeks), and didn't sign the notarized document himself as per the instructions, but rather had his campaign manager do it. He then, half an hour later, faxed in a separate letter with signature--but that wasn't the notarized form that was legally required. Since he failed to comply, he remained on the ballot.

12. Because she has respect for the voters of Michigan and she did not want to disenfranchise them...
All the candidates had their names on the Michigan ballot. When Michigan decided to move their primary date up earlier than what the DNC allowed they were told that their delegates would not count at the convention. Michigan defied the DNC and the DNC decided that the voters of Michigan were worthless and in no need of Democratic representation. Edwards and Obama decided to take their names off the ballot so as to give the finger to the Michigan voter and to kiss the asses of the DNC. Kucinich tried to have his name removed, but Dennis being Dennis fucked it up and did not get the correct paperwork in on time and his name remained on the ballot. Only Senator Clinton gave the voters of Michigan the respect they deserve. Come the convention the DNC may in fact seat the delegates from Michigan, in which case they will count in Clinton's favor. If their delegates are not counted, what makes anyone think that Michigan will vote for a Democrat in the GE? If you take away someone's vote on Tuesday, don't expect to have them vote for you the next time around.

P.S.
The candidates agreed not to campaign in Michigan. Which they did not do. (though some Obama workers made calls to get people to vote against Clinton~~~but that is par for the course with Obama who has no problem breaking rules and laws).

21. I am a disenfranchised voter from Florida
I will not vote for the Party's candidate - as you said, the DNC has no respect for me - hence I shall reciprocate.

I will vote (write-in) my choice or leave the presidential vote blank. I will certainly not be voting for a repig, but the party's choice means nothing to me.

The primary is a state issue. Howard Dean has overstepped his bounds.

I am also active in trying to convince as mean other Florida voters of their disenfranchisement nad encouraging a similar approach to this year's general election.

23. I don't blame you for your decision...the DNC has disenfranchised American voters...
if the repigs had done this we would be up in arms over the dastardly deed. But this was done by the DNC and there is ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE FOR IT! Some arrangement should have been reached prior to the primaries. Iowa and New Hampshire are not owed first and second place in line. Why should they dictate who goes first, second etc.? What I don't understand is why there is so little discussion about this topic here on DU? Everyone seems to be complacent and most people think that the disenfranchised voters of Florida and Michigan will just roll over and vote for whomever wins the primary. The DNC has told these states "your vote does not count...for now...come the GE please join us and vote for the candidate 'WE' chose without you."

13. The Democratic Party was/is wrong to disenfranchise all those primary voters....
A popular election must be respected. Hillary Clinton won a majority share of those delegates and she must be awarded that share.

The "uncommited" who also won a share must be allowed to extend their shares as they wish.

But a popular vote must never be disregarded. Shame on the Democratic leadership! No wonder Democrats lose so many elections.

41. Sort of interesting that the OP has asked this question in thread after thread...
trying to drum up support 'for who knows.'

One more time, just for Sparkles and Stephanie:

The only requirement by the DNC was that the candidates were not to campaign in Michigan. All complied with that requirement except Dennis who did campaign.

It WAS NOT a requirement to pull their names off the ballot. This is a move where EXPERIENCE made the difference--Edwards and Obama, to make a statement, decided to pull their names from the ballot.

Little Dennis made noise to the effect that he was pulling his name off the ballot, slyly failed to do so but still claimed the high road...and then Dennis proceeded to campaign in Michigan against the agreement. Dennis didn't foul up the paperwork to remove his name...he never had any intention to do so.

Hillary is running for the presidency. To run, a basic requirement is to keep your name on the ballot. That is about as honest and straightforward as you can get.

As to the mess in Florida, that misguided state hasn't held an honest election since 2000...and there are no signs that they have corrected any of their problems. Florida will again botch up both their primary and the GE as well...just watch.
