I've said it before and I'll say it again. Look at the goddamn Republicans. Their house is a complete disaster. Hell, the freepers think Dick Cheney will be the compromise candidate. That's like running Lucifer himself. No one likes Cheney. Small animals quake in fear wherever he treads. In unguarded moments, people have seen him swallow rodents like the lizards in 'V.' He's evil incarnate in a poorly fitting human suit.
What does that tell us? That for all our infighting, we're in a hell of a lot better shape than the Repugnicans. Yeah, yeah. I know that the Clintons are secret racists and Obama has a hidden shrine to St. Reagan in his basement, but at least we're not crazy enough to think someone like Cheney is our savior.
Are there things about the two front runners I don't like? Oh--don't even get me started. Am I firmly in the John Edwards camp? Hell, yeah. But Jesus H. Christ on a stick...every single one of our candidates outshines the very best and brightest from the other side. Okay, a 20 watt lightbulb outshines the best and brightest from the other side, but hey... that pretty much goes without saying.
A couple of weeks ago I was worried that we'd create schisms here that we wouldn't be able to heal. I'm not so worried about that anymore. Sure, some of the personal animosity will last long after this race is over, but that's mostly between the individuals involved. The way I figure it, if someone really goes out of his or her way to be an asshole, whatever comes is something specifically asked for.
Honestly, the supporters and detractors of each candidate generally have valid points. All points of view (for the most part) have at least some merit. We could all use a little tolerance for other points of view around here. Accusations of "faux outrage" are way over the top and, in my opinion, anyone that uses them with regards to other Democrats has a screw loose and rattling around in his or her brain-pan. Not only that, it's just plain rude.
At this point I don't think anything WE post is about to change anyone's mind about a candidate. I might be wrong, but most folks now have a favorite they're following. Posting positive things about YOUR candidate is all fine and good, but I'm not sure what there is to gain by following another candidate through the threads and rehashing the same ol' same ol' criticisms ad nauseum.
WE GET IT. You don't like Edwards, or Obama, or Clinton. We get it. When you're the first suspect to show up to bash the candidate you don't like on any thread, you begin to look like a foaming-at-the-mouth fanatic.
Yeah, it's primary season and some of this stuff is to be expected. But who, precisely, does it serve to spend the next several weeks being some kind of mindless attack dog? After a while it ceases to be about the candidates and ends up being about the person doing it.
And some folks have painted a very unflattering picture of themselves indeed.
Leave the dark side and step into the light. It doesn't even hurt. I promise.
We're going to have to unify in the end anyway. Well, except for the "I can't possibly vote for (fill in the blank) because they bite heads off chickens" crowd. So why not give everyone a bit of a break and start thinking of positive ways the different candidates can take on whatever the Repugs will throw at them. If nothing else, it'll be a useful mental exercise.
We know it's coming. We may as well get our hazmat suits ready.
Then again, we can just keep doing what we're doing and continue to look like a bunch of raving assholes. Me, I'm just not going to do it anymore. I'm done criticizing our candidates. Well, unless one of them does something I consider monumentally stupid. Then all bets are off.
