This is a letter from a friend of mine, who also worked for RFK. While the letter is a little dated now, I thought in light of John's performance in last nights debate, I'd post it now.
Dear Friends,
In many ways we have an embarrassment of riches with all of this year’s Democratic presidential candidates. I know many people are still undecided. I am not. I am supporting and campaigning for John Edwards.
I am convinced John is the best candidate and, according to the most recent (12/10/07) CNN poll, John Edwards is the ONLY Democrat who can defeat every Republican candidate – by wide margins. I’m supporting John because he has
The best designed plan for universal health care based on shared financial responsibility
A clearly defined strategy for ending our military presence in Iraq
An environmental policy that invests in renewable energy and disinvests in subsidies for the big oil companies
Most importantly, for me, he is the only candidate who has consistently addressed the needs of those who live in poverty, the growing economic insecurities of middle income families and the widening income divide in this country.
As many of you know, as a college student in Washington, D.C.
I worked for Robert Kennedy while he was the Senator from New York – my Senator. As I have listened to John Edwards campaign, going back to his presidential bid in 2004, I am often reminded of an afternoon when I joined Senator Kennedy in greeting foreign exchange students who had just arrived in the U.S. Senator Kennedy told them – and me – that we each have “a great responsibility to give back to those who are less fortunate, to always remember that we are no better than those who have been given less in life and, in the end, to do all that we can to make life gentler for all our fellow men.”
John Edwards’ policies and passion are committed to those same values of shared responsibility, of common cause with those whose lives have not benefited from the advantages we have shared, and of activism to ensure a gentler life for all our fellow men – and women. Now is the time to decide whose voice and values you want in the White House next year. Please join me in pledging your support to John Edwards for President in the upcoming primary – and in November!
