What If Bloomberg Asked Al Gore to Be On His Ticket?
Edited on Wed Jan-23-08 08:31 PM by David Zephyr
What if Mike Bloomberg -- who is clearly signaling that he intends to run and self-finance a campaign for the White House --- was to ask Al Gore to be on that ticket, to head that ticket.

Would Al consider it?

What impact would a Gore/Bloomberg or Bloomberg/Gore ticket have on the election in November?

Would it hurt the GOP or Democrats more?

He clearly has more than enough money to finance a national campaign.

Would any here vote for such a ticket?

Who else would Bloomberg seek out to be on a ticket with him?

I'd have a hard time believing that Al would be on a ticket like that, but on the other hand, if he was it would transform third party attempts as we know them.

Is there any scenario where Al would hook up with Bloomberg? Or will he stay with our Party?

1. Hypothetically speaking, it would crush a Hillary ticket in a landslide.
But Hillary isn't going to be the Democratic nominee, and Al Gore isn't running third party.

2. Bloomberg is pro-war, anti-union and anti-First Amendment.
Gore wouldn't run with him for those reasons and I wouldn't vote for them even if he did.

6. So was Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN)
The guy who presently sits in Paul Wellstone's former Senate seat (but not for much longer)

3. Gore is a Democrat. That's not parsable.
Unless we nominate Lyndon LaRouche, he'll support the party's nominee. He's never done or said anything to make anyone think otherwise.

Please, think before you post.

8. Doubtful. The Dems are intent on running a "moderate" candidate.
And, either Hillary or Obama will most likely pick "moderate" running mates.

Bloomberg's attraction is as a "moderate" who's occasionally a Democrat, occasionally a Republican.

The Left wouldn't trust Bloomy even with Al. And, the right would shun him because of Al.

10. If Bloomberg finances his campaign out of his own pocket
I doubt that he would consider Al Gore for his VP, as Gore would have very strong opinions that run contrary to Bloomberg's and probably outshine Bloomberg. If Bloomberg goes to the trouble of running for the most difficult job in the land, he probably wants to be number one in all things. Maybe Ron Paul could be a potential running mate, but I'm not sure how they differ on the issues. I do agree with you that Bloomberg would want to have a VP who already has the likelihood of generating his own support and notoriety. He wouldn't want another Vice Admiral James Stockdale of "who am I, what am I doing here?" fame.

11. Best answer thus far.
And it's the answer I was hoping someone would post.

There's no way that Bloomberg would buy Al Gore the presidency instead of himself.

And it then follows that Al probably would not want to be #2 again to anyone...at least I think so. But if he was given a lot of authority, budget and capacity to work on things he wants to...

12. Bloomberg could make Gore the same offer Clinton did in 1992
Run with me and it will be a co-presidency. Clinton gave Gore control over 8 spheres of interest. And that's what made Gore change his mind and jump in 1992; earlier he had said he would sit it out because he wanted to spend time with his family, especially since they had come close to losing their son in an accident.

However, even if Bloomberg did make this offer to Gore, Gore would say thanks, but no, thanks. If that's what I wanted to do, I could have gotten it by myself. And that is our tragic loss, David Zephyr, that Al Gore will probably never run again.
