Black and White (TPM and Slate)
Obama holds a commanding lead in South Carolina, but not among white voters.

Pundits have complained that the Democratic race relies too heavily on racial and identity politics, but the polls continue to suggest that race is still an issue in South Carolina. The latest poll out of the Palmetto State has Obama up by 16 points overall, but it's the race-based data that are most intriguing. Seventy percent of African-Americans favor Obama, according to a new PPP poll (PDF). (African-Americans make up about 50 percent of the respondents.) Among white voters, though, Obama badly trails Clinton 17 percent to 43 percent. That bodes poorly for Obama as he moves on from South Carolina after Saturday's primary.
