Myrtle Beach Sun News Endorses Clinton
N.Y. senator best suited to argue Democrats' case

As a political concept, "change" is overrated. Sure, the political culture in Washington is ugly right now, and Americans rightly are sick of it. Incompetent administration, the breakdown of bipartisanship and presidential leadership that (let's face it) is less than visionary have unsettled all but the strongest stomachs.

But if the 2008 presidential election is to be a contest over the government's future purpose, as it should be, an untested candidate of "change" is the wrong person to carry out the Democratic side of the argument. What's needed is a sharp, savvy, highly skilled politician with a demonstrated grasp of our governmental system: Sen. Hillary Clinton.

We know: The Sun News is recommending the Democrat of whom conservative readers are least fond while looking past the candidate of whom liberal readers seem most enamored: Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois, the first black presidential contender with a genuine shot at winning. In recommending Clinton, The Sun News also is looking past former N.C. Sen. John Edwards - an S.C. native whose determination to eradicate poverty is inspirational.

But if the next president is to be a Democrat - and we are not conceding that it will be - then Clinton should be the person who occupies the Oval Office, especially if she relegates her husband, former President Bill Clinton, to ceremonial status. She certainly has the brains, toughness and skill-set required to chart her own course.

10. If it's about a Hillary endorsement it doesn't count. Only Obama endorsements count.

7. Is this a big paper down there?
I'm surprised any SC newspaper is endorsing Hillary. It's a nice endorsement.
