I sure as hell hope so.
If the Republican nominee is McCain, they will probably hold a few punches in deference to a fellow Senator--a shame, as the RW hate machine will do anything and everything they can, and let McCain, if he is the nominee, say "I had no idea, I will reprimand whoever did it," etc etc, gloating in glee as soon as the cameras and microphones are turned off.
If it's Romney, I think all gloves will be off, although if they are smart, they will not say ANYTHING about his religion, and let the Beverly Huckabillies do their own internal demolition derby. Maybe bring back some 1960s Grecian Formula 16 TV commercials with Romney's mug Photoshopped onto them. Hell, the guys in those commercials, if I recall correctly, already looked so much like Romney, all they would have to do is a voice-over.
After two elections (three, if you include the 2002 mid-terms) stolen with the audacity of a daylight stickup of a downtown gas station, I would hope that the Democratic nominee would be as tough on the nominee of the party that perpetrated those thefts as is necessary.
I was just at a Democrats Abroad meeting where there were members of the German media. They seemed to be as aware as anyone that there had been electoral tampering in the USA. Why are Howard Dean and Rush Holt the only ones still mentioning this? Or, let me put it another way: are we ready for another round of criminal electoral tampering, or are we going to wring our hands in surprised despair one more time? Make electoral tampering a crime with a mandatory 20 years to life, or something--ANYTHING--to give the perps of this second thoughts as to the risks vs. the rewards.
