COLUMBIA, S.C. — Barack Obama has widened his lead over rival Hillary Clinton, according to a new poll on South Carolina’s Democratic primary released Friday. The final South Carolina survey from Public Policy Polling of Raleigh, N.C., before Saturday’s primary has the Illinois senator at 44 percent, the New York senator at 24 percent and former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards at 19 percent.
Obama has remained at 44 percent in each of the organization’s three statewide polls in the past two weeks, but Clinton’s support has fallen while Edwards has increased. Clinton’s support dipped from 28 percent earlier this week, according to the organization while Edwards has increased his support by the same 4 percent.
“Barack Obama is clearly going to win the South Carolina primary,” said Dean Debnam, president of Public Policy Polling. “The interesting trend is the rise of Edwards and the decline of Clinton.”
