Condolences / Nice Words for Hillary and Edwards Supporters.
Edwards people first: I am sorry that your man, my personal second choice, did not make second place in SC. I was really rooting for him. I hope you guys stay strong. I believe in his message, and hope that he gets more air time - he seemed to be getting a bit more after the last debate. Your candidates cause is one that the entire party should rally behind, regardless of who they support, and I hope that he stays in this race so long as he possibly can to give voice to important issues that are easily overlooked in the heated competition going on between Obama and the Clintons.

Hillary people: I am not sure what to say, really. Your candidate and I are at odds, and we will continue to be at odds for some time, perhaps even long after this nomination ends. However, I do admire her ability to fight. That is one thing I never underestimated. Hillary Clinton is a strong woman, and I've always said that if I ever get the privilege to have children, and one of them happens to be a girl, I'd rather her look up to Hillary as a role model than some of the other trash girls look toward now-a-days. I only wish things had not become so negative and that the race over all could have remained clean.

More generally speaking, though, I am sorry for the women all across America who are looking toward Hillary right now as a strong woman who is definitely qualified and capable of taking the presidency... but is being eclipsed by her husband. I am not a woman, but I am outraged that Bill cannot seem to control his ego long enough to actually let Hillary run her own campaign. He seems to almost be in competition with her and has basically turned this entire race into something that is about him. I can only imagine that there are a lot of feminist out there cringing at the sight of Bill and what he is doing - and some of the stupid, stupid things that he has said.

Although Hillary and I are at odds, I do not doubt for a second that she is both qualified to be President - but also equally capable. I hope she can find a way to put a muzzle on Bill so she can get her message out, without him trying to turn himself into a fourth candidate.

1. Thank you, from an Edwards supporter
It's people like you who counteract some of the smug Obama supporters on this board, who aren't doing their candidate any favors. I hope most are like you. And congratulations on Obama's victory tonight.

Yes, we'll stay strong, as will John! As Springsteen said: "No retreat, believe me, no surrender"!

5. I was rooting almost equally as hard for John as Obama in South Carolina, Nevada, and New Hampshire.
I really wanted John's NH strategy to work - to make this campaign a two person race between the two "change" candidates. I would have liked to see the debate. I really do sincerely and honestly mean all that I said in the OP. America should be grateful for a candidate like John Edwards, who is really shining the light onto things most American's out right ignore.

There is also rumor in media circles that Edwards is trying to cut a deal with Obama or Clinton. No word on what the Clinton's said, but Obama's campaign seems to have rejected the notion of any deals. I was disappointed about that, because I would really like to see an Obama / Edwards team up. That was actually my ideal ticket from the beginning - Obama / Edwards or Edwards / Obama. Although, as time has passed I think Edwards would make a more effective Attorney General. There is so much that needs to be fixed there, and I hear that corporations are shitting their pants more at the idea of John being AG than President because then he'd actually have direct power to go after them. :P

2. Thank you for posting this. I, too, support Edwards but it just seems
like this is not his time. I will not have any problem voting for Hillary or Obama or, for that matter, a ground squirrel if it's a Dem. Good post - civil.

3. And that begun tonight if you happen to watch the big rally
in Tenn. HRC came forth with her intro speech and nailed it and then for an hour or so answered questions from the people and not only asnwered them but gave far more information. I am certain this will be the way hrc will run the next 10 days and it will be uplifting and inspiring to all that see and hear her......

6. I hope so.
I am obviously not a Hillary supporter, but I have some sympathy for her in some regards. I really do feel bad that Bill is totally eclipsing her and making it look like she is almost running to be Vice President rather than the President. Don't get me wrong, I realize that the Clinton's are a team. They are equal partners in everything they do, and I really think that is how all marriages should work. I admire that about them both, but Bill isn't a stupid man. He's intelligent. He has to know as a former President that the media is going to focus on him to a rather large degree, and yet at the same time it seems he can't help himself every time he sees a camera.

I don't fault him for campaigning for Hillary. If I were in his position I'd do the same. I just think it's sad that Hillary - as the first woman with a real shot at the Presidency - is being eclipsed by her husband. It's really disappointing, and it's not Hillary's fault at all.

Of course, at this point in the campaign I am starting to wonder if he hurts more than he helps. I am really worried about how things will play out going forward. For all the attention put on Obama having a lack of support among Whites, Hillary is pretty much devoid of support among blacks - a key constituency of the Democratic Party. Bill Clinton's comment basically comparing an Obama win in SC to a Jesse Jackson win... I really and sincerely cannot believe he said that, and I can only imagine what they thought over at the Clinton Campaign HQ. I am sure some of them are ready to get a ball gag, some rope, and tie him to a chair and shove him into a locked closet until it's all over.

4. I'm for Edwards, but not delusional.
I worry about both Clinton and Obama, not because of their abilities, but what will happen to them in the general. Almost 1/2 the country hates Hillary Clinton for no good reason, and Barack Obama will be vilified too. I am guessing Obama has a better chance because of media people like Carlson and worse, who hit Clinton all the time. But if it's Obama, they will go after his experience, and forget his good judgment. I can imagine an undecided voter, in the ballet box, selecting McCain over Obama, because he is known as a maverick, willing to be bipartisan (untrue lately, as we know), leading to a McCain win. And then McCain might die in office, and VP Lieberman becomes president. That would be hard to digest.

10. You summed up my thoughts, too, Meldread.
My wife and I were crossing our fingers for a JE second place finish, and were disappointed when he didn't make it. We both admire Hillary's strength and intellect, but don't appreciate some of her campaign tactics. It's funny to see all the hatred on DU sometimes, because in my opinion, we've got a great batch of candidates this year, and I can find something to praise in all of them. Your post was a breath of fresh air.

11. Thanks, and yeah I agree.
Despite my differences with some of the candidates and their vision... I mean... Wow. Look at who we have on our side. We have three of the strongest candidates in recent memory on stage, each of them strong in their own way, bringing a whole lot to the table.

Then turn and look at the Republican side of the field. LOL. I am sorry, it is hard not to laugh. We completely blow them out of the water on every possible level.

We really have a lot to be proud of this time.
